Spotlight on ... Center for Family Research

The Center for Family Research exists as a coalition of OSU faculty, students, and staff — representing the colleges of Education and Human Ecology, Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, Law, Medicine, Social/Behavioral Sciences, and Social Work — who have interest and expertise in research, assessment, and treatment efforts as they relate to the family, with particular emphasis on the family’s role in the development and well-being of children and adolescents. Affiliated with the College of Education and Human Ecology and the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, the CFR is jointly directed by one faculty member from each of these two colleges. Co-directors are Stephen Gavazzi and Scott Scheer. The CFR’s offices are located in downtown Columbus at COSI, 333 W. Broad St.

2009-2010 University Distinguished Lecturer

Peter W. Culicover, Humanities Distinguished Professor, Department of Linguistics, and Carter V. Findley, Humanities Distinguished Professor, Department of History, have been named 2009-2010 University Distinguished Lecturer at Ohio State. The Distinguished Lecture Series annually recognizes two senior faculty for their outstanding academic achievement, particularly, but not exclusively, in research, scholarship or creative activity.

Culicover has been one of the world’s imminent linguists for more than three decades. His theory of grammar is one of the leading paradigms for the study of language acquisition and his work established the field of learnability — the relation between formal theories of language and the abilities necessary for children to learn language.

Findley is one of the world’s leading scholars in both Ottoman and modern Turkish history, politics and culture whose work has led to a generation of tremendous growth in the field. He was an early pioneer in bringing what had been an isolated field onto the larger landscape of world history. Read more: http://www.osu.edu/universityawards/2009/lecturer.html

Tumor-attacking virus strikes with one-two punch

Ohio State cancer researchers have developed a tumor-attacking virus that both kills brain-tumor cells and blocks the growth of new tumor blood vessels. Their research shows that viruses designed to kill cancer cells – oncolytic viruses – might be more effective against aggressive brain tumors if they also carry a gene for a protein that inhibits blood-vessel growth. The study was led by Balveen Kaur, associate professor of neurological surgery and a researcher with the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. Read more >
