Ho, Dutta develop game-changing CO2 capture membranes

 Ohio State researchers W.S. Winston Ho, Prabir Dutta and their students have taken another step forward in the global race for clean energy – a key element in national efforts to mitigate climate change – by developing a novel and more economical CO2 capture membrane. The research was funded by the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy, which hopes to position the United States as a leader in global clean energy within 10 years by deploying cost-effective carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies at coal-fired power plants.

Schweitzer Fellowship announcement

Graduate and professional students interested in making a difference in the community are encouraged to join exceptional peers at many of the finest universities in the U.S. by applying for the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. Fellows partner with a local community-based organization to create and carry out a yearlong 200-hour service project that addresses an unmet social/health-related need in the Columbus area. Applications are due Friday (2/1) and the 2013-14 Fellowship class will be announced in March.

Dec. 4: College planning session for faculty and staff

The office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is offering a college planning session for Ohio State faculty and staff with children in grades 7-10 to be held Tuesday (12/4) from noon-1 p.m. in 160 Meiling Hall. This is the first in a series of three workshops planned for this year. Feel free to bring a lunch.

Fact, Faith, Science and Religion

Neal Conan of NPR’s Talk of The Nation moderates “Fact, Faith, Science, and Religion” every Friday in December at 9 p.m. on WOSU PLUS. This panel discussion features Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, and science and religion scholar Karl Giberson. The program is the fifth and final installment of the “Controversies In Science” series created by COSI, Ohio State, and WOSU Public Media. The project was supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

STRS – Preparing to Retire Forum Dec. 11

Faculty who are ready to retire but have questions on the process should attend a special session on Tuesday (12/11) from noon-1 p.m. Reps from State Teachers Retirement System and Human Resources will discuss the retirement process and steps you need to take in order to apply for your retirement. This is a general session for all faculty. Specific retirement questions can only be answered by STRS if you call them directly to request a retirement estimation.

New process for clinical research services review

Starting Tuesday (1/1), the Research Billing Office will begin providing information to Radiology and Ophthalmology for all studies involving their services to determine if the services can be accommodated, etc. Two question and answer sessions about this new process will be offered on Thursday (12/6) from 11 a.m.-noon and Thursday (12/13) from noon-1 p.m. in 1063 Graves Hall.
