Register today for COVID-19 virtual town hall

Everyone is encouraged to register for the university-wide COVID-19 virtual town hall on March 1, at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will include information on university planning efforts related to the summer term and fall semester as well as updates on vaccinations and other topics. Participants should register using their university email address and are encouraged to submit questions in advance. The registration link is here. The town hall will be recorded and posted on the Safe and Healthy Buckeyes website.

No tailgaters into residence halls

Whether you live on or off campus, safety should always be a priority. Never let unknown persons into your home. On campus, prevent “tailgating” into residence halls by making sure individuals behind you use their own BuckID for entrance. In this week’s Safety Spotlight, OSUPD’s Officer Margaret Rizalvo discusses what you can do to add another layer of security to your home. Watch the video and keep strangers away.

Baker named deputy director, Institute for Optical Science

Robert Baker, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, has agreed to serve as deputy director of the Institute for Optical Science. He has been a member of the institute since its inception in 2018 and is co-director of the NSF NeXUS facility. Baker's research uses ultrafast optical-XUV spectroscopy to study surface electron dynamics and interfacial charge transfer to control catalytic energy conversion processes.

NIH renews PREP funding, bolsters diversity

The College of Medicine’s Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), which provides research opportunities for aspiring PhD students who are underrepresented in biomedical research, recently received renewed NIH funding. It’s one of three pipeline programs at the college with the goal of improving diversity in biomedical education.

College of Nursing, #13 Nationally in NIH Funding

The College of Nursing (CON) is proud to announce its jump from #16 in 2019 to #13 nationally in 2020 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant funding rankings presented by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. Among public institutions, the CON ranks #7. The college has experienced growth the past several years earning increased funding year over year since 2015. This research has allowed CON faculty to continue working to transform health care and improve lives.

Scarlet and Gay Scholarship Program

Scarlet and Gay: The OSU LGBTQ Alumni Society is dedicated to making studying at Ohio State a financial reality for more LGBTQ students and their allies. We offer nine scholarships to undergraduate students. New for our 30th anniversary, the Board of Governors of Scarlet and Gay voted to donate the proceeds from this year’s fundraiser to support our Scarlet and Gay Scholarship for Queer People of Color (QPOC). We will award an additional eight scholarships at $2,500 each. Apply by March 16. Special thanks to the College of Social Work’s LGBTQ+ Committee for its coordinated effort to sponsor two QPOC scholarships.

Microaggressions webinar

Microaggressions are common, often subtle expressions of bias, many times initiated unintentionally and unconsciously that can have serious impacts on recipients including shortening a person’s life expectancy. In this 90-minute webinar, participants will learn how to recognize common microaggressions and the hidden, harmful messages they send. We will disentangle intention from impact and identify best strategies for responding when we accidentally initiate a microaggression.

'Translation and the Lived Geographies of the Black Mediterranean'

In this talk on March 5, Camilla Hawthorne will focus on a set of productive tensions: the tension Black Italians encounter as they articulate the specificities of Black subjectivity (and anti-Black racism) in Italy in relation to the myth of a supposedly “colorblind” Mediterranean Italy on the one hand and the overwhelming dominance of Black Atlantic geographies and North American understandings of race in conversations about Blackness on the other hand.
