As part of Stress Awareness Month, the Graduate School team would like to take this chance to recognize that there are normal stressors that graduate students experience at the end of spring term, such as course completion, future term course enrollment, dissertations and graduation. As you tackle these stressful areas, remember that the Graduate School is here for you with resources to help you develop career-building skills or to assist you with course enrollment and completing degree requirements. You also can visit the Chief Wellness Officer page with CARES grant-supported mental well-being programming information or the Student Health and Well-Being Strategies and Resources to find out about the wide array of university support for your well-being. The Student Evaluation of Instruction (SEI) is your chance to give feedback about your learning experience to instructors and departments. Now through April 25 at 11:59 p.m., you can complete your SEIs in Carmen Canvas or on OSU Mobile. You also can see SEI results from prior terms in Carmen. Please provide your anonymous feedback today.

Participate in the Emerging Adulthood Health Project. Researchers at Ohio State are looking for teens and young adults to participate in an online research study aimed at better understanding people’s health behaviors and attitudes. Participation involves a 10-15 minute baseline survey and three 5-10 minute follow-up surveys. You will receive a $25 online gift card for baseline and a $10 gift card for each follow-up. Participating in these surveys may make you qualify for additional studies related to this project. To determine if you are eligible to participate, please complete the screener survey at this link.

Committee begins search for permanent head of Equity office

The university has named a search committee to assist in the selection of Ohio State’s associate vice president for the Office of Institutional Equity. Associate General Counsel Brandon Lester will chair the committee, which includes a cross-section of faculty, staff and student representatives.

Summer term will use Emergency Pass grading system

Students will be graded using the Emergency Pass grading system in summer term 2021 in recognition of the exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The system, which was first implemented in spring semester, replaces lower letter grades with a PE mark that is not factored into grade-point averages. This change applies broadly to undergraduate and graduate courses that are traditionally graded A-E.

Join us for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual Assault Awareness Month, led by the Student Life Student Wellness Center, is a university-wide collaboration to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate individuals and the Ohio State community on how to prevent it. From March 29 to April 20, 28 events will take place virtually and focus on empowering the community to prevent violence, All events are open to all students, staff and faculty, with specific events for graduate/professional students taking place throughout the month.

Mask On/Mood Up

Stress, anxiety and depression have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are three brief evidence-based strategies that you can practice every time you put on your mask to increase your mood and reduce the stress in your life: deep abdominal breathing, saying a positive self-affirmation, and being kind to others or naming someone you are grateful for and letting them know. Join the Mask On/Mood Up movement to promote positive mental health.

Creating meaningful engagement in an online course

A major struggle associated with teaching online, either synchronously or asynchronously, is cultivating student engagement. Student engagement fluctuates due to a variety of factors. In this collaborative workshop, we will explore principles of motivation and attention and apply them to our online courses. Topics to be discussed include maintaining an instructor presence, creating an online learning community and creating engaging online discussions and course content.

In the context of a pandemic, heightened attention to racial injustice and pervasive political conflict, students and teachers alike must grapple with trauma in their everyday lives. This workshop equips participants with a trauma-informed approach to teaching, anchored in compassion, preparedness and accessibility.

Apply to be an OWL-C

The Office of Student Life – Residence Life is looking for student leaders interested in mentoring and leading new Buckeyes. Ohio State Welcome Leader - Coordinators (OWL-Cs) go through their own training before the OWL program and this year that will include virtual components. OWL-Cs will help lead an OWL flock and share about campus resources, answer questions about college life and help them prepare for their OWL role. You will work closely with OWL Area Coordinators and serving as an OWL-C provides opportunities to build leadership and organizational skills while also making connections with others. Earn up to $16 an hour as a student bus driver for Ohio State’s Campus Area Bus Service (CABS). We will train you to drive! Options are also available for students who prefer to drive smaller vehicles. CABS offers flexible scheduling to accommodate class schedules. If you’d rather not be behind the wheel, apply to be a student service crew member, with starting pay at $14 an hour. Positions are available for summer and autumn semesters.
