Preparing for summer term

As announced on April 1, the Summer 2020 term will be offered through virtual modes of teaching and learning. Please remember that the academic calendar for summer term was adjusted by one week. • Classes will start on May 13 and end on July 31. • Finals will take place Aug. 3 5. • Summer commencement will be Aug. 9. For any students, faculty or staff who need support with virtual learning, teaching or work, the university continues to maintain the Keep Learning, Keep Teaching and Keep Working websites. Faculty also can find support and resources through the University Institute for Teaching and Learning.

NARCAN® kits available at outpatient pharmacies at The James and East Hospital. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has joined Ohio’s network of opioid education and naloxone distribution programs in partnership with Project DAWN (Death Avoided With Naloxone). Ohio State will provide naloxone (NARCAN®) kits to the public at no cost at our outpatient pharmacy locations at the James and East hospitals. A prescription is not necessary to receive training or to pick up the medication. For program locations and information, visit our site.

Wireless maintenance today: Some devices may need to reconnect

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) will be performing wireless network maintenance today between 5 and 7 p.m. This maintenance will update the service certificate before it expires. No disruption is expected for users with newer devices, manufactured in 2010 or more recent years. However, those with older devices will need to run the wireless configuration utility to apply the new certificate after this routine maintenance is complete. If you are having trouble connecting to osuwireless after today, please visit wireless.osu.edu and click “Connect to osuwireless” to run the automatic configuration utility and establish a secure connection to campus Wi-Fi.

Engage in the LeaderConnection conversations

Gain insights and perspectives from university leaders by joining the LeaderConnection 30-minute Zoom sessions. The discussions connect our community and invite leaders to share how they actively engage with agility and grace through these uncertain times. On May 7, Norman Jones, Dean/Director, OSU Mansfield, will lead a session on “Responsive Communication and Being Nimble.” The conversations continue the following Thursdays with Melissa Shivers, Vice President, Student Life and Helen Patton, Chief Information Security Officer. What will it be today? Conflict, compete or collaborate. The workplace can be a breeding ground for conflict. We can try to ignore or accelerate conflict or make everything into a competition. On the other hand, we can choose to work collaboratively or cooperatively together to further the goals of our organization. It's a choice we make, so what will it be today? Information design during COVID-19

When our class moved online because of COVID-19, visual interpretation of data and information has become even more important. Junior-level visual communication design students in DESIGN 4153 Information Design used their visualization skills to help people understand various facts and statistics about the outbreak and how to support each other during this challenging time. Canvas discussion board, Zoom meetings and Miro were used for ideation and discussions, with students using print, motion or interactive media.

Ohio State Press book selected for Choose to Read Ohio program

A Mile and a Half of Lines: The Art of James Thurber, edited by Michael Rosen (BS ’76) and published by The Ohio State University Press in 2019 to accompany the Columbus Museum of Art exhibit by the same name, has been named a 2021–2022 Choose to Read Ohio book by the State Library of Ohio. The initiative promotes reading across Ohio through a biennial booklist of 20 representative titles for all ages. A Mile and a Half of Lines includes contributions from luminaries such as Seymour Chwast, Ian Frazier, Liza Donnelly, Michael Maslin, and Thurber’s daughter, Rosemary Thurber.

Teaching Support Program deadline approaching

Compensation is closing on May 15 for faculty who complete the first two components of the Teaching Support Program (TSP). The TSP will remain after this date, but the opportunity for compensation will have passed.

Opportunities

Smart and Connected Communities ideas session

The Office of Research and partners will offer an information session and ideas exchange on Wednesday, May 13 from 1-2:30 p.m. via Zoom in response to two active or anticipated NSF funding opportunities: the Smart and Connected Communities and the Civic Innovation Challenge. The session will feature an overview of the funding opportunity and an opportunity for potential applicants to exchange ideas. Partners include the Sustainability Institute, the Translational Data Analytics Institute, and the Center for Regional and Urban Analysis.
