'Shot' Shuttle ends May 7; free Lyft rides to Schottenstein end May 16

The university has provided transportation options to students, faculty and staff who have vaccine appointments at the Schottenstein Center. As the end of spring semester nears, the "Shot" Shuttle service will be available through May 7 at 7 p.m. A new student promo code for free Lyft rides to the Schottenstein Center is available for rides through May 16. Codes will expire after that time.

The legendary Josephine Baker takes the spotlight tomorrow. On Friday, May 7, starting at noon, the Wexner Center for the Arts will stream a virtual talk on the legendary stage and silent screen star Josephine Baker. Terri Francis, director of Indiana University’s Black Film Center/Archive and author of the new book Josephine Baker’s Cinematic Prism, connects with Columbus critic and No Evil Eye cofounder Ruun Nuur to discuss Francis’ critical look at one of the 20th century’s most controversial, contested and trailblazing performers. The conversation is free and comes with a chance to stream Baker’s 1927 film Siren of the Tropics. Register here.

Study focuses on mental health in critical care nurses

A study led by Bernadette Melnyk, chief wellness officer and College of Nursing dean, found that critical care nurses nationwide reported alarmingly high levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety even before the pandemic began, factors that correlated with an increase in self-reported medical errors. The study was published on May 1 in the American Journal of Critical Care.

Storage for new BuckeyeBox accounts

New users who request BuckeyeBox accounts on or after May 11 will not be able to create and own new files and folders in Box. This enables new users to collaborate on any content that is shared with them and to save documents to existing folders owned by other users. We encourage all users to begin new projects in OneDrive in preparation for the retirement of BuckeyeBox.

Summer tuition assistance enrollment window new requirements

New for summer 2021, applications will be required for faculty and staff tuition assistance. The enrollment window for summer semester 2021 ends May 14. Eligible faculty and staff can apply in Workday or with paper forms. Applications for dependent tuition assistance must also continue to be submitted each term. Staring summer 2021, both parents will be required to enroll in dependent tuition assistance to qualify for the 75% benefit. To receive dependent tuition benefits, the student must have a Social Security number on file with their university student record. See the HR website for more details.

Price receives ARIS Impact Goals Award

Courtney Price, education and outreach specialist for the Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center and the Center for Applied Plant Sciences, was awarded a 2021 Impact Goals Award from the Center for Advancing Research Impact in Society (ARIS). The award recognizes an individual’s efforts in advancing engagement with the broader impact goals outlined by the National Science Foundation.

CLLC announces two NSEP Boren recipients

Congratulations to NSEP Boren Scholarship recipients James Hall and Shawn Conroy. Next year, James will be studying abroad and plans to continue working for the U.S. government as a Diplomat after his Boren studies. James is a Marine who has served in Korea, Japan, France, Liberia and China. Shawn will be studying abroad at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv taking Ukrainian language classes. He plans to continue working for the U.S. government as an analyst of Eastern European affairs after his Boren studies.

Stroke is the number five cause of death in the United States. On average, one person dies from a stroke every four minutes. Eighty percent of all strokes are preventable. Recognize the warning signs using the FAST acronym: Face drooping, Arm weakness or numbness, Speech difficulty and Time to call 911. You can prevent a stroke by managing blood pressure and cholesterol, not smoking, engaging in regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy body weight. Socially constructed perceptions of either academic or professional success have made us a “model minority," effectively erasing our historical and present day experiences with systemic racism and oppression. This workshop unpacks the numerous identities that exist within the APIDA community and the historical legacy of oppression that caused this myth's creation. 12th Avenue closing at Cannon Drive
