The Search Advisory Committee for the vice provost for Arts and Sciences and executive dean, College of Arts and Sciences, is assembled. Alan C. Michaels, dean and Edwin M. Cooperman Chair in Law, Moritz College of Law, will serve as the committee chair.

Simone Drake, Hazel C. Youngberg Trustees Distinguished Professor, was named chair of the Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS). The position began June 1 and continues to June 30, 2022.

Holub named chair of NELC, reappointed chair of GLL

Robert Holub, Ohio Eminent Scholar and professor of German in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures (GLL), was appointed interim chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (NELC), effective July 1. He also was reappointed chair of GLL, a post he's held since 2014.

Travel must be booked through agencies

A new travel initiative takes effect today (8/1) that will have short- and long-term benefits for the university community. Individuals traveling on university business now must book their flights and car rentals through Ohio State’s travel partners. (People may continue to directly arrange local flights within countries where booking through outside travel agencies is impractical.) Universal use of these contracts will allow us to maximize negotiated benefits and to better support travelers in the case of natural disasters or other emergencies.

The Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professorship honors full professor colleagues who have excelled in teaching, service and research/creative activity, and whose work has demonstrated significant impact on their fields, students, college and university, and/or the public. This honorific title is reserved for the most distinguished faculty. This year, five professors were appointed from a slate of impressive nominees.

Deadline for Center for Applied Plant Sciences Seed Grant

The 2018-19 Ohio State Center for Applied Plant Sciences (CAPS) Seed Grant Program Request for Applications is now open. The CAPS mission is to build synergy that illuminates basic biological concepts and translate these into applications that offer practical solutions to important problems. CAPS provides affiliated members with support and tools for novel discoveries, commercialization and economic development opportunities. Submit a letter of intent by Monday (8/6).

Syllabi and Carmen workshops

The University Institute for Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with partners UCAT and ODEE, is offering two workshops to give you a jumpstart to the upcoming semester. "Syllabus Basics" will cover the traditional, operational elements required in the syllabus and begin to examine how you might craft your syllabus to best meet your needs and those of your students. "Start in Carmen" introduces you to the Ohio State learning management system, Carmen. Each workshop will be presented on Thursday (8/2) and again Friday (8/3).
