Additional information about the COVID-19 Dashboard

The university maintains a public COVID-19 dashboard to keep students, parents, faculty, staff and the public informed about COVID-19 at the university and in Ohio. This includes the total number of tests, student positive results and student positivity rate over the most recent available 24-hour period, as well as a seven-day rolling average. A new detailed explanation of the included metrics is available on the Dashboard Measures and Interpretations page of the Safe and Healthy Buckeyes website.

Ohio State leaders celebrate Big Ten decision to resume fall sports

Ohio State University President Kristina M. Johnson joined Athletics Director Gene Smith and Head Football Coach Ryan Day in celebrating the decision by the Big Ten Conference to proceed with fall sports including football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s cross country, by a league-wide unanimous decision of school presidents. The decision reverses the August postponement of fall sports.

Pain reliever that alters perceptions of risk

While acetaminophen is helping you deal with your headache, it may also be making you more willing to take risks, a new study suggests. People who took acetaminophen rated activities like “bungee jumping off a tall bridge” and “speaking your mind about an unpopular issue in a meeting at work” as less risky than people who took a placebo, researchers found. The study extends a series of studies that have shown acetaminophen has psychological effects that most people don’t consider when they take it.

BuckeyePass changes coming in October

You may need to adjust your BuckeyePass authentication options. On Oct. 15, the “Call Me” option will be retired. If you use this option, you will need to go to buckeyepass.osu.edu before Oct. 15 and add a new contact method. On Oct. 29, BuckeyePass will begin protecting all Office 365 applications, including Outlook. Please note that this change has already been completed for staff and faculty. You will be prompted to reconnect to these applications using BuckeyePass. New authentication options have been added such as MacBook Touch ID, security keys and hard tokens.

HR Service Delivery Launch: HR Connection Launches September 21

HR Connection will launch next week, on September 21, and can be accessed using Compass, the HR Connection Portal, via email and by phone (614-247-myHR). The HR Connection Portal will be available 24/7 and hours of operation for phone and email response will be 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Faculty, staff, and student employees can contact HR Connection for support on a variety of HR and payroll requests. For a list of services available through HR Connection, please refer to the service catalog.

Proposals for 2020 research grant

The Drug Enforcement and Policy Center (DEPC) invites Ohio State faculty and graduate students to submit proposals for funded research. The DEPC grant program focuses on supporting research on issues related to law reform for traditionally illicit drugs and the impact of modern drug laws, policies and enforcement on personal freedoms and human well-being. The center aims to support three to five research projects each academic year. Standard awards range from $2500 to $10,000. The deadline for the 2020 Call For Research Proposals is Nov. 9.

Study of effectiveness of blended learning

Associate Professor Tzu-Jung Lin, College of Education and Human Ecology, with co-principal investigators Michael Glassman and Eric Anderman, received a $1.4 million grant from the Institute for Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education. In the four-year project, they will boost knowledge of the effectiveness of blended face-to-face and online learning for elementary students by developing and evaluating a social studies intervention. The team will collaborate with teachers to test the intervention’s effectiveness in promoting fourth- and fifth-graders’ interpersonal competencies and academic achievement. More than 700 children in two central Ohio school districts will take part.

Staff Career Development Grant applications

Planning your next professional development opportunity and need funding? Apply online for the Staff Career Development Grant. Eligible staff can apply for a grant of up to $1,250 for individuals, $1,750 for groups of 2-10 and $2,000 for groups of 11 or more, and the funds can be used for a variety of professional development opportunities related to job and career goals, excluding travel at this time. Online applications are being accepted until Sept. 30, and funds can be used from November 2020 through May 2021.
