Expanded mental health services

Student Life Counseling and Consultation Service’s “Let’s Talk” has been expanded to occur Monday through Friday. The university is also offering a counseling group for students who have tested positive for COVID-19 and must isolate as a result. Pyun appointed director of Institute for Korean Studies

Danielle Pyun, associate professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, has been appointed director of the Institute for Korean Studies (IKS). Pyun will be responsible for enhancing Korean studies programming to advance and disseminate knowledge about Korea, including its people, language, art, culture, history and its society to students, faculty, staff and throughout the state of Ohio.

Ohio State hosts Midwest Climate Summit to accelerate climate action

If the 12 Midwest states were a country, it would be the fifth-largest greenhouse gas-emitting nation on earth. The Midwest Climate Summit, hosted by Ohio State and Washington University: St. Louis, with support from the Bloomberg Foundation, kicks off its fall 2020 Think Tank program Oct. 2 at 11 a.m., featuring Robert Bullard, the father of environmental justice. Sessions are Oct. 9, Oct. 23, Nov. 6 and Nov. 20 with plans underway for a major spring event. Join Ohio State and Midwest experts to accelerate climate action, develop a Midwestern response and plan next steps in solving our climate crisis.

Pharmacy held successful virtual summer camp

When COVID-19 forced in-person activities to be canceled, the College of Pharmacy had to get creative to ensure the success of its long-running summer camp Pills, Potions and Poisons. So Cynthia Canan, camp director and lecturer, and her team got together and made a plan to pull off a virtual camp.

Interdisciplinary research seed grant

The IDI Interdisciplinary Research Seed Grant is available for interdisciplinary teams working on innovative, well-defined research projects. The seed grant program helps to get new projects off the ground, enhancing their competitiveness for extramural funding in the future. The maximum award amount is $25,000 for a one-year project. Applications are accepted twice per year, and the next deadline is Oct. 1. at 5 p.m.

ArcGIS Online Challenge

Have you come across an interactive map on the web and wondered “how did they make that?” Have you heard about GIS (geographic information systems) and wished you could learn more? If you answered “yes” to either question, the Autumn ArcGIS Online Challenge is for you! This self-paced, 100% online challenge is designed to be completed over five weeks, with 2-3 hours of work per week. This workshop is Sept. 28 to Oct. 30 via weekly email prompts.

Understanding racial bias in algorithms

In the digital society, algorithms can be a major source of structural racism. Harmful bias can be baked into the algorithms that companies use to decide who gets jobs or loans and that government uses to determine who gets paroled or placed on the no-fly list. On Sept. 25 at noon, a panel of Ohio State professors and researchers will help us understand racial bias in algorithms – what it is, how it happens and how we can prevent it.
