Flu shots strongly recommended for faculty, staff and students

Ohio State University leaders are strongly encouraging faculty, staff and students on all campuses to get a flu shot this year. This recommendation applies to all members of the community, whether they are living, learning and working on a campus or at home. Employees at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, some health sciences colleges and Student Health Services should follow existing enhanced compliance requirements.

Tonight at 7, stream the world premiere of Cinetracts ’20. Cinetracts ’20 presents a global picture of the current moment through mini films by over 20 filmmakers from around the world, including Charles Burnett, Akwaeke Emezi, animator Kelly Gallagher and Columbus’ own Cameron Granger and Dani and Sheilah ReStack. Supported by a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award, the program debuts tonight, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. and will stream indefinitely alongside writings and interviews from the filmmakers. What’s a researcher to do?

Rich Milner will discuss racial bias as it is embedded into academic research in the second session in a webinar series from the College of Education and Human Ecology. The series, focused on how to make research more equitable and accurate, was created by Lori Patton Davis, professor of higher education and student affairs, and Penny Pasque, professor and the college’s director of qualitative methods. The webinar will take place Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.

'Liking' an article online may mean less time spent reading it

When people have the option to click “like” on a media article they encounter online, they spend less time actually reading the text, a new study suggests. Researchers found that people spent about 7% less time reading articles on controversial topics when they had the opportunity to upvote or downvote them than if there was no interactive element.

Forward: Creating Feminist Futures

In observance of its 20th anniversary, The Women’s Place will host a virtual symposium on Oct. 22 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. to highlight how feminist advocacy helps us address local and national gender inequality. Conversations and interactive workshops will cover topics such as health policy, teaching and education, leadership and women’s political participation. Rebecca Traister will be the featured keynote speaker. This free event is open to everyone.

Ohio State Transplant Clinic opens in Cincinnati

Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center Comprehensive Transplant Center opened a new clinic Oct. 7 on the campus of the Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health in Cincinnati. This location will make it easier for patients in southwest Ohio to receive care close to home from a leader in transplant care. This is the second transplant clinic to open as a result of the two hospital systems’ Healthy State Alliance, a strategic initiative formed to improve community health by tackling Ohio’s most critical health issues.

WOSU Public Media receives regional EMMY® Awards

WOSU Public Media received five Ohio Valley Regional EMMY® Awards for work produced in 2019. Winners were recognized during the 56th Annual Ohio Valley Regional EMMY Awards ceremony held Oct. 4. Mary Rathke, senior TV producer/director with WOSU Public Media, received the Silver Circle Award, one of the highest honors given by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Brent Davis, WOSU's arts, life and culture content director, received an Emmy for “The Career Path Less Taken,” a documentary produced with ideasteam in Cleveland and CET in Cincinnati.

Grant for Ohio State's carbon-capturing membrane

A new, $4 million DOE grant will help W.S. Winston Ho and Dr. Yang Han advance Ho’s pollution-reducing membrane toward commercialization. The technology can capture 90% of the carbon dioxide emitted from coal-fired power plants. Most significantly, the process meets the energy department’s goal of developing a carbon capture technology that costs less than $40 per metric ton.

Graduate Professional Development Program

The Global Arts and Humanities is pleased to announce our newest initiative, the Graduate Professional Development Program. These Graduate Professional Development Fellowships aim to embed graduate students in humanities and arts MFA or PhD programs and establish a mentoring framework that will guide the student’s engagement, illustrate best practices and thresholds for achievement and hone praxis-based skills. Principal investigators and faculty collaborators may serve as mentors. Apply by Nov. 1.
