Gallego-Perez earns NIH ‘high risk, high rewards’ research grant
Daniel Gallego-Perez, biomedical engineering assistant professor, has won a $2.3 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s New Innovator Award. Gallego-Perez, who also is an assistant professor of general surgery in the College of Medicine, will use the grant to build on earlier studies that demonstrated how tissue nanotransfection can convert skin cells into blood vessels and nerve cells.

How to bring more black men into medicine
In 2015, the Association of American Medical Colleges released <em>Altering the Course: Black Males in Medicine</em>, a report highlighting this alarming fact: Fewer black men were enrolled in medical school in 2014 than had been in 1978. Many doctors around the country, led by Ohio State’s Dr. Quinn Capers IV, have joined a social media campaign to raise the visibility of black men in medicine and hopefully encourage the next generation of black males. Since the Twitter campaign #BlackMenInMedicine launched in November 2017, many other black physicians have joined in.
