WOSU launches podcast on Workforce Development

A recent report found that nearly 30,000 youth across central Ohio are neither in school nor working. At the same time, there are 270,000 open jobs in Columbus alone that pay $22 an hour. WOSU Public Media looks at this disconnect with its newest podcast series, Rivet. It tells the stories of 16- to 26-year olds, in their own words, trying to achieve professional success by taking nonconventional routes. Rivet launches Thursday (11/8).

Alternative Thanksgiving 2018

Come to the Alternative Thanksgiving Celebration 6-8 p.m. tonight in Performance Hall. This event gives Native American/Indigenous students an opportunity to create and nurture their Ohio State community as they would if they were at home within their tribal communities whether in an urban, reservation or traditional lands space. Traditional Indigenous foods will be served. RSVP needed.

Lal receives international agriculture award

Rattan Lal, Distinguished University Professor of Soil Science, has received the 2018 World Agriculture Prize from the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences for his lifetime achievements. Lal is a faculty member in the School of Environment and Natural Resources, director of the college’s Carbon Management and Sequestration Center and president of the International Union of Soil Sciences.

Statewide engagement center to connect families, schools

A federal grant of $4.2 million to the College of Education and Human Ecology will create the new Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center directed by Barbara Boone. The college’s Center on Education and Training for Employment will partner with the Ohio Department of Education to empower teachers and parents/caregivers to create strong relationships to support the educational success of K-12 students. Up to 10,000 families are expected to engage over five years.
