New legislation supports goal of educating state workforce

Ohio State President Kristina M. Johnson announced her support today for a new effort to offer incentives to keep students learning and working in Ohio. State Rep. Jon Cross (R-Kenton) announced new legislation to attract and keep students and workers in Ohio with a proposal that includes state income tax credits, targeted scholarships and expanded student aid. Cross was joined by President Johnson and other higher education and business leaders to announce the Graduate and Retain Ohio’s Workforce (GROW) Act at a press conference at the Statehouse Monday morning.

The Commencement Speaker Advisory Committee seeks assistance in identifying future graduation speakers. Students, faculty and staff may nominate candidates via the nomination portal. Speaker criteria and nomination process information are available at the link below. Two Ohio State engineers elected to NAI

Two engineering faculty in the College of Engineering have been elected to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) 2021 class of fellows. Ayanna Howard, dean of the College of Engineering, and Stuart Cooper, distinguished professor of chemical engineering, join a class of 164 academic innovators representing universities and governmental or nonprofit research institutes named to the fellows program this year. They are the 13th and 14th Ohio State inventors to be chosen as NAI fellows.

Ohio State wins gold at the 2021 iGEM competition

Ohio State was awarded a Gold medal at the 2021 iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition. This year, the team chose to tackle the problem of sepsis, a major cause of death around the world. The team identified several genes that encode enzymes that can detoxify a bacterial molecule that triggers sepsis, lipid A, and then designed a bacteriophage (or virus that infects bacteria) that could inject genes encoding these enzymes into bacteria. Test predicts early signs of dementia

Many people experience forgetfulness as they age, but it’s often difficult to tell if these memory issues are a normal part of aging or a sign of something more serious. A new study finds that a simple, self-administered test developed by researchers at the Wexner Medical Center, College of Medicine and College of Public Health can identify the early, subtle signs of dementia sooner than the most commonly used office-based standard cognitive test.

Combating antimicrobial resistance in Ethiopia

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) has been awarded a $4 million grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to enhance detection, response and prevention of antimicrobial resistance and associated health threats in hospitals in Ethiopia.
