Town meeting set for Larkins project

The architects planning the Larkins Hall project will hold a town meeting for students, faculty and staff from 7-8:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Ohio Union Conference Theatre. The purpose of the meeting is to allow users and nonusers of Larkins to provide input about what they would like to see incorporated into the recreation portion of the new facility. This is an information and idea gathering session and all ideas are welcome.

The Larkins Hall renovation and replacement project calls for renovating existing facilities, replacing the Peppe Aquatic Center and construction of a new building.

Day of Remembrance event is Feb. 22

A Day of Remembrance event in memory of the U.S. internment of Japanese Americans during World War II will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Ohio Union Main Lounge. On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law Executive Order 9066, which authorized relocating or interning Americans of Japanese ancestry.

Ohio State's event will include three speakers and will provide an opportunity for members of the University community to talk about the internment. Robert Jiobu, associate professor of sociology, will speak about the internment experience. Naomi Fukomori, instructor of East Asian languages and literatures, will discuss the place the internment holds in Japanese-American literature. Lee Ann Roripaugh, a Columbus-based poet who grew up near an internment camp at Heart Mountain, Wyo., will share her poetry on the subject.

Friends of Libraries needs used books

Friends of the OSU Libraries, 112 Main Library, welcomes donations of books at its office or will arrange to pick them up.

Donated books are either added to the current library collections or are sold at the Friends of the OSU Libraries biannual book sale, to be held this year May 3-5. Proceeds from these sales are invested in the Ann and Emanuel Rudolph Preservation Endowment and the William J. Studer Library Endowment. Both funds assist the OSU Libraries with preservation and acquisition efforts.

Kirwan to speak at USAC Town Meeting

The University Staff Advisory Committee is sponsoring a "Town Meeting with President Kirwan" from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 16. The meeting will take place in the OSU Law School Auditorium (Drinko Hall) and is open to all. For more information, visit the USAC Web site at www.osu.edu/org/usac.

 

 

Event looks at role of women in the Bible

A Women's Day of Reflection will be held from 9:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Feb. 26 at the St. Thomas More Newman Center, the Catholic student center at Ohio State. Women of all ages and denominations are invited to join in a day of prayer, discussion and reflection on the role of women in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, and how those women can serve as role models today.

The event is titled "The Unbroken Chain: Our Biblical Mothers and Sisters." The day's theme will be presented through a keynote speech, panel discussion, prayer and a play written specifically for this day.

Prior registration is encouraged. The pre-registration cost, which includes lunch, is $5 for students and $10 for nonstudents, with tickets available at the door for $15. For information, call Ceci Gray, 291-4674.

 

 

Medical Center hosts genetics workshop

Experts in gene therapy at Ohio State Medical Center are offering a free workshop on the role genetics plays in individual health and the risks of acquiring certain heart and lung disease.

The workshop will be held from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 16 at Rhodes Hall Auditorium. Leading the discussion will be Pascal Goldschmidt, director of the OSU Heart & Lung Institute, and Mark Wewers, deputy director.

Luncheon lecture is on Women in Taiwan

The OSU Association for Women in Development will sponsor a luncheon seminar from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Faculty Club. Rita S. Gallin, professor of sociology and women's studies at Michigan State University, will present "From Farm to Factory: Women and Change in Rural Taiwan."

In addition to her research interest in China, Gallin has written on women and economic transformation as a world process.

Reservations must be made for the luncheon seminar. Seating also may be reserved for those who want to attend the seminar but not eat lunch. Career Services nominations sought

Nominations are being sought for the 1999-2000 University Career Services Award, which recognizes faculty and staff who support student career development and career services programming.

The $500 award will be presented at the University Career Services Annual Speaker meeting to be held during spring quarter. Nominees should meet the following criteria: They must hold a University position outside of the career services area; their official job responsibilities do not include career advising and/or job assistance counseling; they work with students individually or promote career services-related activities to students; and they should demonstrate leadership in supporting career development as a significant campus activity.

Entries sought for video showcase

The Wexner Center is accepting entries for its annual Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase, to be held May 20 in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. The deadline for entries is April 7.

Entries must be independently produced, no longer than 20 minutes, and produced in Ohio within the last 18 months. Entries must be submitted on 1/2-inch videotape; however, they can be screened in any film or video format at the showcase. Only one entry per person will be accepted. Works submitted to previous showcases will not be accepted.

The Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase, organized by the Wexner Center's film/video department, provides Ohio's independent film and video artists a chance to present their work to an audience in a theater. Last year's capacity crowd viewed 14 works by artists from all over Ohio.

Three honored by Convention Bureau

Three Ohio State faculty and staff members were recognized by the Greater Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau Feb. 3 for their efforts to bring conventions, workshops and visitors to central Ohio.

Those honored at the bureau's annual luncheon meeting were John Street, associate professor of horticulture and crop science; Barbara Bloestscher, program assistant in horticulture and crop science; and Karen Mancl, professor of food, agriculture and biological engineering.

A board member of the Ohio Turf Grass Foundation, Street coordinates with OSU's Office of Continuing Education the foundation's annual meeting that attracts 4,600 people to Columbus.

Bloetscher coordinates three short courses at the Holiday Inn on the Lane on golf course maintenance, lawn care and ground maintenance and sports turf management.

In conjunction with the Office of Continuing Education, Mancl coordinates the Ohio Water Quality and Waste Management Conference, a meeting also sponsored by Ohio State Extension.

 

 

University Health Connection open

University Health Connection, a new faculty and staff clinic designed to promote preventive care, disease management and overall health and well-being, is now open. The clinic, sponsored by the Office of Human Resources, is located in Room 100 Parks Hall.

University Health Connection is available to all faculty and staff enrolled in a University health plan. Walk-ins will be accepted at Urgent Care 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, while special services care is by appointment only, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Lecture looks at 127 years of literature

The College of Humanities is hosting its fourth Inaugural Lecture of the academic year, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Faculty Club. Joseph Tebben, professor of Greek and Latin -- Newark, will present "Remembrance of Scholars Past: 127 years of Ancient Lang-uages and Literatures at Ohio State University." RSVP to 292-1882.

 

 

Mt. Everest explorer to speak at OSU

John B. West, noted researcher in the study of human performance under high-altitude conditions and explorer of Mt. Everest, will speak at the Ohio State Medical Center on Feb. 24.

West will speak on "The Physiological Challenge of Climbing Mt. Everest."

The free event will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the Medical Center Heritage Center on the fifth floor of the Prior Health Sciences Library. For details, call 292-4891.
