Operation Feed starts April 17The Office of Human Resources is coordinating the University's participation in Operation Feed, to be held on campus April 17-May 5. The annual community outreach and service project is sponsored by the Mid-Ohio FoodBank and United Way of Franklin County to help provide non-perishable food for distribution to 136 food pantries and 52 soup kitchens and emergency shelters in central Ohio. OMA seeking alumni for November reunionThe Office of Minority Affairs is seeking the names, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers or mailing addresses of any African American, Asian American, Hispanic or Native American alumni for a Nov. 2-5 celebration acknowledging the success stories of OSU minority alumni. Minority alumni, along with faculty and staff, can attend workshops on diversity, alumni partnerships and various topics. Scheduled activities for alumni include a Nov. 2 welcome reception in the Longaberger Alumni House; a"Scarlet and Gray Ball" on Nov. 4; and campus tours, sponsored tailgate parties and a block of football tickets for special alumni guests Nov. 4. Outreach Roundtable set for April 12The President's Council on Outreach & Engagement is hosting a roundtable discussion from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 12 in the Terrace Room of the Ohio Union. A panel comprised of Wanda Dillard, Pinky Davis, Henry Fields and Dev S. Pathak will discus outreach and engagement in the health and science communities. The roundtable is sponsored by OSU CARES/OSU Extension and the President's Council for Outreach and Engagement. Guests are asked to bring a lunch. OSU golf course seeking membersFull- and part-time or retired faculty and staff are eligible for membership to the University Golf Course at the corner of Kenny and Tremont roads. Employees must have at least a 50 percent appointment. Retired faculty must have emeritus designation or at least 25 years of service. Retired staff must have at least 25 years of service, not including buyouts. Golf course members can schedule tee times in advance, bring guests, and rent lockers and space to store their clubs. They also are eligible to join the Scarlet and Gray Club and Mens and Ladies Golf Association for tournaments. Annual membership costs are $1,440 for faculty and staff, $1,440 for adult dependents, and $700 for dependents younger than 21. An associate faculty-staff membership costs $720 a year, but golfers must pay a greens fee of $28 per round. Faculty and staff also can present their University ID cards to play 18 holes for $30 a round. For more information, contact Chris Walsh at 292-8309.
Graduate Research Forum is April 15The Council of Graduate Students will host the 2000 Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum on April 15 in McPherson Chemical Laboratory. Now in its 14th year, the forum is co-sponsored by the Graduate School and the Office of Research. Cash prizes will be awarded in 10 different academic areas, and the top prize will include a $500 travel grant for presenting the research at a professional conference. Women in Science Day is April 7In celebration of Women in Science Day at Ohio State, the Association for Women in Science of Central Ohio (AWISCO) has invited area schools to bring students in the seventh, eighth or ninth grades to campus April 7. The highlight will be a keynote presentation,"Miz Wizard's Science Secrets," written and performed by author and storyteller Jane Curry, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Ohio Union West Ballroom. The presentation will include stories of Nobel Prize winners and Miz Wizard's demonstrations of physical and chemical principles. OSU to host Ohio Science OlympiadOhio State, University College and the Office of Continuing Education will host the Ohio Science Olympiad on April 15. The event will be headquartered at the Ohio Union, but will take place at various locations across campus. Assisting in production of the event are ROTC and the colleges of Biological Sciences, Engineering, Human Ecology, and Math and Physical Sciences. Ohio students representing 80 middle and high schools will compete in individual and team events for the opportunity to represent the state at the National Science Olympiad May 19-20 at Eastern Michigan University. HIV Forum set for East High SchoolThe Ohio State Medical Center will hold an April 11 public forum on HIV and how it is affecting the central Ohio community. Michael Para, director of the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at OSU Medical Center, will lead the discussion on HIV education and prevention and give medical updates on available treatments for those living with HIV. At the event, a panel of persons living with HIV will share their personal experiences and give options to others on how people with AIDS can live relatively normal and healthy lives. Representatives from local AIDS service organizations will provide information on services they offer the community. The program will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at East High School's auditorium, 1500 E. Broad St. For more information, call 293-8112.
Proposals sought for Schoen AwardsThe Office of Academic Affairs is calling for proposals for the Kathryn T. Schoen Awards. The awards provide opportunities for professional growth and leadership for women in higher education, and are presented in alternate years to faculty members or administrative and professional staff at Ohio State. Women faculty members with five years of continuous service at Ohio State who have demonstrated potential for a career in higher education administration may apply. Two awards -- one of $2,500 and the other $1,500 -- will be presented June 7 during the 2000 Distinguished Staff and Kathryn T. Schoen Awards luncheon ceremony. Applications should be submitted by April 21 to: The Kathryn T. Schoen Awards Program, Attention Molly Davis, Office of Academic Affairs, 203 Bricker Hall, 190 North Oval Mall. The application should include a proposal and budget; two letters of support, one from a department chair, dean, director or unit supervisor; and a resume.
Flower sale to benefit Mortar BoardThe Ohio State Mortar Board Chapter is conducting its annual Secretary's Day Flower Sale, with flowers to be delivered to a main campus address by board members between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on April 26. Orders must be received by April 14. Mortar Board is a national senior honor society, founded at Ohio State in 1918, dedicated to promoting scholarship, leadership and community service.
