JamesCare hosts cancer fatigue classThe JamesCare for Life: Comprehensive Oncology Rehabilitation Program is sponsoring a special class session May 16 for patients with cancer and their families dealing with managing cancer-related fatigue. The class will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in room 518A of the James. Guest speaker is Susan Newton, a member of the oncological advanced practice, nurse consultant and educator. Workshop covers business conceptsThe Center for International Business Education and Research at the Fisher College of Business will present a workshop for language faculty and professionals June 15-17 focusing on incorporating business concepts into language curricula. The workshop, to be held in Pfahl Hall, will cover such issues as the construction of business curricula, teaching using the case method, and how to integrate business concepts and pedagogy into the language classroom. Ohio State honored in special publicationWho's Who in Black Central Ohio -- Millennium Edition includes a special section honoring 28 Ohio State faculty and staff. The 200-page publication includes pictures and biographical data on distinguished African-American leaders in the central Ohio community and highlights their significant accomplishments. Distance Learning discussion plannedThe Academy of Teaching and the Office of Faculty and TA Development are co-sponsoring "Distance Learning: Considerations for Instructors and Administrators"from 1-3 p.m. May 19 in the new Younkin Success Center, room 150. Chadwick hosts flower sale and fairThe volunteers and staff at Ohio State's Chadwick Arboretum are hosting a Spring Plant Sale and Garden Fair, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 12 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 13. A specimen plant and tree sale will be held at noon May 13. The event will take place behind Dakan Hall, at Lane Avenue and Fred Taylor Drive. The sale will feature perennials, herbs, ornamental trees, flowering shrubs, old favorites, student-grown heirloom vegetables and hanging baskets. The fair will include garden experts and master gardeners, vendors, garden books and a raffle. Proceeds benefit the Chadwick Arboretum. May 31 is deadline for outreach grantsSeed grant proposals to the President's Council for Outreach and Engagement, OSU CARES and the Campus Collaborative are due May 31. Each of the three initiatives has a unique proposal criterion for the awarding of the seed grants. OSU CARES grants focus on initatives that partner colleges/units with OSU Extension anywhere in Ohio. The Campus Collaborative grants focus on outreach/engagement initiatives that respond to specific needs of the University District consistent with the mission of Campus Partners. The Council's grants focus broadly on outreach and engagement activities of the University in locations throughout the city, state, nation and world. TELR sponsors two awareness meetingsThe Technology Enhanced Learning and Research office will continue its TELR Awareness Series this month with two presentations. Dale Ouzts, general manager of WOSU Stations, will discuss digital television and the future of technology in education from 1:30-3:30 p.m. May 11 in the Math Annex Building, room 170. His talk is titled Technology, Television and the Future. Jan Box-Steffensmeier, from the College of Social and Behavorial Sciences, and George Kalbouss, from the College of Humanities, will share their experiences regarding video-based distance education for Distance Education via Video from 1:30-3:30 p.m. May 25 in the Math Annex Building, room 170. Campuswide flu shot effort a successMore than 6,000 Ohio State employees received an influenza vaccine this fall, during the campuswide influenza immunization initiative launched by the Faculty and Staff Wellness Program. The number vaccinated is a 277 percent increase from the 1997-98 season. From October to December, 6,624 employees received the vaccination. Eighty-four percent of those vaccinated received services at an on-campus/mobile site sponsored solely or in part by the Wellness Program. Thirty percent of the vaccinated employees were first-time flu vaccine recipients. The program continues to sponsor several mobile screenings and educational initiatives on a regular basis around campus. Bair geology lecture planned for May 25"Contamination of Woburn Wells G & H: What the Experts Said at Trial, What we Know Now,"will be presented by Scott Bair on May 25 in 100 Mendenhall Laboratory. Bair, chair of the Department of Geological Sciences, will present trial data and superfund data in an effort to assess unresolved issues in the 1982 legal drama featured in the recent book and movie, A Civil Action. As the 2000 GSA Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer, Bair has spent the past nine months speaking on these issues at colleges and universities across the country.
