Garland speaks at Baccalaureate for the College of HumanitiesMartha Garland, vice provost and dean for undergraduate studies at Ohio State, is the featured speaker at the College of Humanities Baccalaureate. The annual celebration of the achievements of students, faculty, staff and alumni begins at 3:30 p.m. June 8 in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. The event is free and open to the public. An alumna of the College of Humanities, Garland was appointed vice provost in October 1997 and oversees all academic aspects of undergraduate education, from students' initial contact with Ohio State through their graduation. Garland earned a bachelor's degree in history from Tulane University and the University of London in 1964. She holds a master's degree in medieval history from Cornell University and a doctorate in modern British history from Ohio State. A faculty member in the Department of History, she became associate dean for curriculum and instruction of the College of Humanities in 1993, and in 1996-97 she served as undergraduate dean of arts and sciences. Garland is leading a focused effort to improve the University's approach to undergraduate teaching and to increase student retention and graduation rates. She also is involved with such student leadership initiatives as the Mount Leadership Society, the Honors and Scholars Living and Learning Communities, and the development of the Younkin Success Center. During the Baccalaureate ceremony, two Ohio State alumni will receive the Humanities Alumni Society (HUMAS) Alumni Awards of Distinction. The year 2000 winners are Karen Schwarzwalder (B.A. 1965, English) and Shirley Yee (M.A. 1983 and Ph.D. 1987, history), who will be recognized for their outstanding professional achievements and for having brought distinction to the college. Schwarzwalder is president and chief executive officer of Columbus' YWCA and serves on the Columbus Public Schools Board of Education. Yee is chair of the University of Washington women studies department and the author of Black Women Abolitionists: A Study in Activism, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in History. HUMAS also will present Outstanding Student Awards to Janet Badia, a Ph.D. candidate in English, and Abra Kravitz, a senior majoring in comparative studies and East Asian languages and literatures. Volunteers needed for commencementAbout 150 faculty, staff and student volunteers are needed to serve as ushers at the June 9 commencement ceremonies on the Oval. Duties will include distributing programs, showing guests to seats, providing directions to various buildings and campus areas, and generally assisting the visitors who have come to see family and friends receive their diplomas. Last year, the volunteer ushers contributed greatly to the friendly atmosphere of the event, said Frank Gencur, associate director of the Ohio Union and volunteer coordinator. "The staff and faculty enjoyed the experience and really made the guests feel welcome,"he said. Volunteers are required to attend rehearsal from 8 to 11 a.m. on June 8, and be on site from 7:30 a.m. to noon on June 9. OSU Poll 2000 winners namedThe Ohio State Center for Survey Research has selected the winners of the $100 prizes for the 2000 OSU Poll. One winner was randomly selected from each group of participants: faculty, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students. The winners are: Faculty -- David Jacobs, professor of sociology; staff -- Edward James Schlechty, mathematics; graduate students -- Robert Forrest Jacques, law; and undergraduates -- Sarah Kathryn Johnson, political science. The OSU Poll is an annual omnibus survey of Ohio State's Columbus campus community. The purpose of the poll is to provide strategic planning data gathered for University departments and units to assess programs and services, and to provide data to be used for scholarship. For details, call 688-5627. Newark campus art show is June 3-24The Newark campus of Ohio State and the Licking County Art Association will host the LCAA Juried Art Show June 3-24. The show will take place in the Newark campus art gallery in LeFever Hall, which is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The show will feature 40 works by local artists from Licking and surrounding counties. Some pieces will be marked for sale. The opening reception is from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on June 3. James offers program for caregiversThe James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is offering a three-part course for caregivers of cancer patients. Oncology professionals will lead the program, which focuses on planning ahead for positive problem-solving. It includes instruction in nutrition, nonmedical interventions for pain and safe mobility. Participants receive a free reference guide, The Home Care Guide for Cancer.
