Teacher's technology conference is June 13The College of Education's Technology Enhanced Teaching & Learning (TETL) Project will hold a one-day conference on June 13 on Preparing Teachers to Use Technology. College faculty and K-12 teachers will observe and discuss how the latest educational technologies are being used in local school classrooms. The conference is from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and includes a panel discussion from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and various presentations and discussions throughout the day. WOSU hosts Antique Affair June 25Area antique specialists will appraise items brought in during An Antique Affair, hosted by the WOSU Stations from 2 to 5 p.m. June 25 at the Fawcett Center. Each participant may bring two items to be appraised, excluding stamps, guns, coins and weapons. Tickets for the event are $20 per person and may be purchased by calling 688-3777 weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The event is limited to 400 participants. Learning Network asks for proposalsThe Ohio Learning Network seeks proposals for the Ohio Learning Intranet Conference, Navigating 2000, to be held in Columbus on Oct. 23 and 24. Proposals are requested for the following session tracks: Using Technology in the Classroom; Offering Courses and Programs at a Distance; Technology Support of Distance Education; and New Technologies Showcase. The deadline for proposals is June 14. All sessions will be Web cast simultaneously and archived for later educational purposes. Ohio Learning Network is a consortium of Ohio's colleges and universities using technology to enhance education. Stone Lab announces lecture seriesChristopher Jones, director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, will kick off the Stone Laboratory Summer 2000 Lecture Series June 15 with"The Conservation and Revitalization Fund and Related Issues." All lectures are free and open to the public, and will be held at the lab's Gibraltar Island location in Put-In-Bay harbor. The lectures will begin at 7:45 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m. A University boat will leave the dock in front of the Research Building on South Bass Island at 7:30 p.m. before each session. Stone Lab, the University's north coast campus, is the Lake Erie research and teaching laboratory for the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. It is the oldest freshwater biological field station and research laboratory in the country. Comic strip exhibit opens June 12Cartoonists Lynn Johnston, Scott Adams, Charles Schulz, Mort Walker, Art Spiegelman and others are featured in The Comic Strip: Cartoonists' Nude Self-Caricatures exhibition at the Ohio State Cartoon Research Library's Reading Room Gallery from June 12 to Aug. 31. The show features more than 70 works demonstrating variations on the theme of nudity in art. Some persons may consider the art in this exhibition inappropriate for children. UTS to offer Internet software bookletFor the past two years, University Technology Services' Software To Go Web site has supplemented the HomeNet/OfficeNet CD sold at the Bookstore by providing the most current versions of supported Internet software, including Netscape, Eudora and several other applications. Because Software To Go has become the most timely, economical and convenient software distribution method, especially for those with high-speed connections, and because individuals have several alternate ways to obtain current Internet software, UTS plans to phase out the HomeNet/OfficeNet CD sold at UniComp. The CD will no longer be distributed effective June 19. UTS will be making a new booklet available covering all the information needed for obtaining and configuring Internet software, including server names for configuring new computers and operating systems to connect to OSU servers. The booklet will be available for download by late June at www.osu.edu/units/uts/publications/documentation/. Laboratory safety training offeredA Laboratory Safety Training Course will be offered again by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety during summer quarter. Five consecutive two-hour sessions will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on July 12, 19 and 26 and Aug. 2 and 9 at 1314 Kinnear Road. Training is open to anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of general lab safety. Class size is limited to 50 students. To pre-register, call 292-1284. Main Library hours set for next quarterThe Main Library has scheduled the hours it will be open between quarters and during summer quarter. Between quarters, June 8-18, the circulation desk will be open from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 8-9; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 10 and 17; 1 to 6 p.m. June 11 and 18; and 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 12-16. Summer quarter, the circulation desk will be open from 7:45 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 7:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday. Summer quarter hours begin June 19. Many of the specialized libraries have different hours, and some are closed on the weekends either during break or during summer quarter. Mental health programs scheduledThe Mental Health Association of Franklin County on June 14 will host a community program exploring substance abuse co-occurring with mental illness. The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at Franklin Hall, Columbus State Community College, 550 E. Spring St. A professional statewide conference,"Double Jeopardy: Integrating Treatment of Dual Disorders," will also be held that day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the same location. Faculty and staff mentors neededFaculty and staff volunteer mentors are needed for high school interns visiting campus June 19-30 as part of a summer internship pilot program run by Campus Collaborative and Columbus Public Schools. Intern sites and mentors are needed for 50 high school students. The students will be 10th- through 12th-graders from the five Columbus high schools that serve the University District. The students need a minimum of 30 hours of internship experience over the two-week period. Mentors will be asked to attend a 90-minute training session on either June 15 or 19. Mentors are needed in a wide variety of offices and departments to meet student interests.
