Outreach roundtable features KirwanPresident Kirwan will be the guest speaker at the Outreach and Engagement Roundtable that meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 22 in the Terrace Room of the Ohio Union. Kirwan will discuss his vision for Ohio State to become the nation's model in establishing a land-grant mission and agenda relevant for the 21st century. Kirwan has identified outreach and engagement as one of the four major goals of the University. All members of the University community interested in outreach and engagement are welcome to participate in any of the roundtables, which meet twice each quarter. Participants can bring a brown bag lunch. Beverages will be provided. The roundtables are sponsored by OSU CARES/OSU Extension and the President's Council for Outreach and Engagement. Nov. 30 is deadline for women's grantsThe deadline for two separate Critical Difference for Women Professional Development grants is Nov. 30. The purpose of the Professional Development Grants for Women program is to advance the professional development and career mobility of women. The Women of Color Advancement Grants are designed to assist women of color who are faculty, staff and graduate students in professional development activities and networks. Spirit of Women series meets Nov. 17The Spirit of Women Lunch Series is offering a free educational session titled "Determining Your Genetic Risk for Cancers," presented by Paula Gregory, director of outreach and education for the James Cancer Hospital. Grants support service learningMartha Garland, vice provost and dean of undergraduate studies, has announced a call for proposals for faculty grants to develop curriculum-based service-learning courses. Service-learning, a form of experiential education, links organized student community service participation with structured classroom components to enrich the student experience and benefit the larger community. The Service-Learning Roundtable, a group of faculty appointed by the Office of Academic Affairs to study and promote service learning at Ohio State, has received funding from the Campus Collaborative Seed Grant Program. Six grants of $250 each will be awarded to faculty members to support the identification and acquisition of resources and materials to support the inclusion of servicelearning course development or modification. Grant applications should include the proposed course number/title for 2000-2001, the quarter of the proposed offering, a brief course description and proposed use of funds. Submit applications by 5 p.m. Nov. 29 to: Martha Garland, vice provost and dean of undergraduate studies, 203 Bricker Hall, 190 North Oval Mall. Fisher, Patton win Louis Nemzer AwardThe Ohio State University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors is hosting a chapter meeting and awards presentation to announce the recipients of the 1998 and 1999 Louis Nemzer Award. Susan W. Fisher (1998) and David B. Patton (1999) will be presented the award during the presentation and reception from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Grand Lounge in the Faculty Club. A chapter meeting will follow from noon to 12:30 p.m. The Nemzer Award is presented to faculty members for achievements in the preservation and protection of faculty rights. The award is named after Louis Nemzer, considered a strong advocate of faculty governance at Ohio State.
Staff leadership workshop is Dec. 6The Office of Academic Affairs, through a Kellogg Leadership for Institutional Change seed grant, will sponsor a half-day leadership workshop from 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 6 in the Main Lounge of Ohio Union. Nancy Hunter Denney, a nationally recognized trainer, will lead a workshop titled "Leadership: Making the Connection to Staff Positions -- The Future is Yours to Create!" Her presentation will focus on the connection between identifying one's leadership style and developing strategies to attain personal and career goals. The workshop is free and targeted for administrative and professional and certified civil service staff. Ohio State also is extending invitations to staff from the Higher Education Council of Columbus, a consortium representing several Central Ohio colleges. Registration information will be sent to OSU staff through campus mail within the next week. Seating is limited and prompt registration is encouraged. 2000 Ohio State poll deadline is extendedThe deadline for submitting questions to the Ohio State Center for Survey Research for this year's OSU Poll has been extended to Nov. 24. The annual poll provides a cost-effective mechanism for faculty, units and departments at the University to collect data for scholarship and planning purposes. More than 1,200 randomly selected respondents are interviewed, with a minimum of 300 participants in each of four groups of faculty, staff, undergraduate students and graduate/professional students. OSU Hospitals East sponsors screeningsComprehensive heart screenings will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. Nov. 13 at University Hospitals East, 1492 E. Broad St. The cost of participating in the OSU Heart Partners program is $15. The screenings will take place in Wallace Auditorium at Talbott Hall. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 293-5123. Parking is free next to the auditorium. Each screening tests total cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, physical activity status, stress evaluation, nutritional status, family history evaluation and smoking habits.
Study on stress needs participantsMarried couples between the ages of 18 and 75 are needed for an Ohio State research study on stress and health. Research participants must be in good health and willing to spend 26 hours together on a hospital research unit on two different occasions. Each spouse will be paid up to $900.
