Garage K changes begin March 12

In an effort to improve parking availability for Medical Center patients and visitors during peak patient care hours, Garage K on 12th Avenue will convert to all-public parking on March 12.

The card reader will not accept faculty and staff hang tags except between 2:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday and from 2:30 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Monday. Alternative parking locations include the Ninth Avenue garage, 11th Avenue garage or in the several remote surface lots near the Medical Center.

Kirwan to speak on education reform

President Brit Kirwan will deliver a speech titled"Ohio at the Crossroads: The Choice is Ours" during a Columbus Metropolitan Club forum from noon to 1:15 p.m. on March 14. The event takes place at the Athletic Club, 136 E. Broad St.

Kirwan argues that both K-12 reform and strengthening Ohio public colleges and universities are essential, and that failing to address each will set back the fortunes of Ohio students, penalize the state's economy and cost more in the long run.

Career Services seeks nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2000-01 University Career Services Award, which recognizes faculty and staff who support career services programming. The $500 award will be presented May 16. Nominees must hold a University position outside of the Career Services area, must work with students individually or promote career services-related activities to students, and should demonstrate leadership in supporting career development as a significant activity.

Nominations can be submitted to Natalie Fike, Arts and Sciences Career Services, 05 Brown Hall or by fax at 688-3036.

Wexner hosts annual Hair Ball fund-raiser

The most outrageous head gear will be on display from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. March 24 as the Wexner Center hosts its annual Hair Ball. This year's fund-raiser,"Hair Ball 2001: A Hair Oddity," is organized by community and Wexner Center 12 1/4 Circle volunteers.

The event will include a hair-judging contest, dance music and videos showing an exhibition of styles.

OSU East offers free cancer screenings

Free colorectal cancer screenings provided by Ohio State physicians will be offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 14 at University Hospitals East, 1492 E. Broad St. Screenings are recommended for men and women age 40 and older. They take about 15 minutes to complete and consist of filling out a short risk assessment form and a confidential discussion with the doctor.

Blood Drive visits Medical Center

Participants in the third annual Doctors' Day Blood Drive can honor a favorite physician by donating blood in his or her honor. The drive, sponsored by the Columbus Medical Association Alliance and the American Red Cross Blood Services, Central Ohio Region, will include a stop at the OSU Medical Center from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 9.

Tressel to address Metropolitan Club

Ohio State Football Coach Jim Tressel will address the Columbus Metropolitan Club at a community forum from noon to 1:15 p.m. March 21 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel ballroom. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required by March 19.

March events affect traffic, parking

Annual state high school sports tournaments and the March 16 winter commencement will affect campus-area traffic and parking. Events to watch for include:

  • Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Girls' State Basketball Tournament, Jerome Schottenstein Center: 2-11 p.m. March 15-16; 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. March 17. All Scarlet, Gray and Buckeye parking lots will be reserved for OHSAA and disability parking passes, as well as members of the general public attending the tournament.
  • OHSAA Boys' State Basketball Tournament, Schottenstein Center: 11 a.m.-11 p.m. March 22-24. All Scarlet and Gray parking lots will be reserved for OHSAA and disability parking passes. In addition, the North Riverbank parking lot will be reserved for campers and buses. The Buckeye and St. John Arena lots will be available for nonreserved public parking.

Arts institute seeks summer participants

Gifted and talented high school students who will be entering the 10th or 11th grade next fall can experience the arts at the College of the Arts' two-week Summer Institute, to be held July 9 to 20.

Areas of study are dance, music, theatre, the visual arts or creative writing. Ohio State faculty and visiting artists will share their expertise through teaching, workshops and one-on-one mentoring.

Bridge courses set for spring quarter

Two courses offered spring quarter through the Office of Continuing Education's Bridge Program will draw on the expertise of Ohio State faculty in the medical and landscape architecture areas.

HIMS 545B"Legal Aspects of Hospital and Health Information Services" will look at legal issues in health care not only from the perspective of the provider but also from a consumer's viewpoint. Larch 693B"Design and Construction of Residential Landscape Spaces" will provide an opportunity for an amateur gardener/landscaper to study residential landscape design with a professional landscape architect.

Wexner seeks video showcase entries

The Wexner Center is accepting entries for its sixth annual Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase, to be held at 7 p.m. May 11 in the center's Film/Video Theater. The deadline for entries is March 23.

Pieces must be independently produced, no longer than 20 minutes long and produced in Ohio within the previous 18 months. Entries must be submitted on 1/2-inch videotape, but can be screened in any format at the showcase.

Symposium explores death penalty

On March 30-31, prominent law and social science professors, legislators and attorneys will gather at the Ohio State College of Law to discuss the current system of capital punishment across the country and specifically in Ohio. Participants will assess the possibilities for legislative reform of the modern administration of the death penalty.
