University observes Disability Awareness Month in April

April is Disability Awareness Month, and Ohio State will be celebrating with a number of events to raise the University's consciousness of the issues faced by people with disabilities. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate.

Ferrari to address Metropolitan Club

Mauro Ferrari, director of Ohio State's Biomedical Engineering Center, associate director of the Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute and professor of internal medicine, will address the Columbus Metropolitan Club at a community forum from noon to 1:15 p.m. April 4 at the Columbus Athletic Club. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required by noon April 3.

Simmons to deliver Humanities lecture

Clare Simmons, professor of English, will present "Bad Baronets and the Curse of Medievalism," the College of Humanities' seventh Inaugural Lecture of the year, at 7:30 p.m. April 10 in the Faculty Club. By tracing some examples of the bad baronet in 19th-century writing, the lecture analyzes Britain's complex relationship with its medieval past and the prevalence of medievalism in present-day discussions of aristocratic privilege.

Social Work hosts research symposium

The College of Social Work is hosting the 13th national Symposium on Doctoral Research in Social Work, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 6 in the Drake Union.

Keynote speaker Mansoor A.F. Kazi, director of the Centre for Evaluation Studies at the University of Huddersfield, England, will deliver "Realist Evaluation for Practice" from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The OSU community is welcome to attend.

Couples needed for stress study

Married couples between the ages of 18 and 80 are needed for research on marriage, stress and wound healing. Participants must be in good health and willing to spend 26 hours together on a hospital research unit on two separate occasions, as well as attend follow-up appointments.

Speakers address diversity perspectives

The Professional Schools Recruitment Committee and the Office of Minority Affairs are co-sponsoring a visit by John Matlock and Margaret Scisney-Matlock of the University of Michigan April 19 on the Prior Health Sciences Library's fifth floor.

Matlock, associate vice provost, executive vice president for academic affairs and director of the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, will present "Meeting the Challenges: Keeping Campus Diversity Thriving, Not Just Surviving" from 9 to 11 a.m. Scisney-Matlock, associate professor of nursing, will speak from 11 a.m. to noon on faculty involvement with recruitment and retention and her experiences with mentoring students.

Daughter to Work Day registration begins

Registration is April 5-20 (or until workshop seats are filled) for this year's Take A Daughter to Work Day, to be held at Ohio State on April 26. This year's event includes nearly 50 workshops, including a series of sessions related in their use of technology, as well as a keynote speech by The Women's Place Director Judy Fountain and her daughter.

Task force seeks chapter advocates

The Greek Life Task Force is looking for faculty and staff interested in mentoring students outside the academic environment to serve as chapter advocates. No affiliation or experience is necessary. A reception to learn more about this opportunity will be held at 5 p.m. April 19 in the Main Lounge of the Ohio Union.

Mentoring Input sought in FYE survey

The Office of First Year Experience (FYE) is undertaking a survey of existing Ohio State mentoring and incoming freshmen-contact programs. Research supports the need for early contact with incoming first-year and transfer students, and FYE staff would like to compile a resource library of programs coordinated by academic or administrative units across campus.

Libraries offering diversity fellowship

A Diversity Student Fellowship in Library and Information Science is available through a cooperative venture between the Ohio State Libraries and the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science. The fellowship supports graduate study leading to the Master of Library and Information Science degree, and will include a full tuition scholarship and stipend.

Women in Science presenters needed

The Association for Women in Science of Central Ohio is calling for faculty to present demonstrations, workshops or other science-based experience as Ohio State celebrates Women in Science Day May 11. Workshops or demonstrations will take place at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Ohio Union, and should be geared toward girls in grades six through nine who will be visiting campus.

ODS seeking award nominations

The Office for Disability Services (ODS) is accepting nominations for the Dick Maxwell Award, to be presented at an assembly May 10.

The award recipient will be selected for significantly enhancing the quality of the higher education experience in ways that make a substantial difference for a student with a disability, and contributing to outstanding and sustained improvement in the services provided by ODS, or his or her department, with respect to students with disabilities. The deadline for nominations is April 14.

Piza-Lopez is OSU-WID luncheon guest

Eugenia Piza-Lopez will present "Women Building Peace: From the Village Council to the Negotiating Table" at 4:30 p.m. April 18 in 120 Mershon Center. The lecture is presented by OSU-Women in Development, the Mershon Center and the Office of International Affairs. Piza-Lopez is head of the Policy and Advocacy Department of International Alert.

Registration opens for caregivers group

Registration is now being accepted for a caregiver support group for family and friends of loved ones with cancer. The free, eight-week spring session begins April 10 and is hosted by the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. The group meets 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Griswold-Worthington Senior Center, 777 High St.

Medical Library hosts database workshops

The Health Sciences Library is offering basic and advanced versions of the Searching the Health Sciences Databases workshops spring quarter. The sessions teach effective techniques for searching MEDLINE and related OhioLINK databases.

Basic workshops will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. April 5, and 9:30 a.m. to noon April 10. The advanced workshop will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon April 19. Workshops are held in the library's classroom (Room 400 A&B).

Outreach conference set for April 20

To further enhance the strong partnerships being formed between communities and the University, Ohio State is hosting "Helping to Build Ohio's Future: The Ohio State University's Outreach/Engagement Commitment" on April 20. The Outreach and Engagement conference will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Downtown Columbus.

Seminars explore politics and Internet

The School of Public Policy and Management is sponsoring an interdisciplinary series, "Democratic Electrons: The Political and Policy Implications of the Internet." The series meets twice each quarter and is supported by the Interdisciplinary Research Seminar, Office of Research and the Graduate School. The schedule for spring quarter is:

  • April 13, 9-10:30 a.m. -- Jane Fountain, John F. Kennedy School at Harvard University, will present "Building the Virtual State."
  • April 27, 9-10:30 a.m. -- William Dutton, Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California, will present "Dotcom Politics and Public Policy: A Case of Cyberadvocacy."

Open forum set for new Faculty Rule

An open forum will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 6 and April 20 to discuss new Faculty Rule 3335-5-0, dealing with the alteration and abolition of units. All faculty, staff, students and administrators are invited to attend the forum to be held at 107 Hamilton Hall.

'Soul of mathematics' the subject of event

Ken Millett, professor of mathematics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will speak on "The Soul of Mathematics" at 4:30 p.m. April 3 in 724 Math Tower. The Math 2001 Colloquium is sponsored by Ohio State's Department of Mathematics. Millett contends that students in a variety of disciplines need to acquire confidence and experience in using mathematical ways of thinking.

Women's Club event features Watson

Sylvia Watson, faculty member of the Feng Shui Institute of America, will deliver "Feng Shui Basics -- Ancient Wisdom for Modern Living" during the April meeting of the University Women's Club. The meeting will be held April 2 at the Faculty Club. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.; the program begins at 12:30 p.m.

Tressel preview benefits Alzheimer's

Head football coach Jim Tressel's spring preview luncheon will benefit the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio. The April 4 event, in which Tressel will provide insights about the upcoming season, takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility. Tickets are $60.
