USAC hosts Kirwan for town meeting

The University Staff Advisory Committee is sponsoring a Staff and Faculty Town Meeting with President Brit Kirwan April 20 in the Ohio Union. Senior Vice President for Business and Finance William Shkurti and Associate Vice President for Human Resources Larry Lewellen will be joining Kirwan to answer questions regarding the Academic Plan, health care costs, compensation, diversity, state budget allocation and any other Ohio State-related issues. Before, during or after the meeting, many Ohio Union food vendors will be offering discounts for staff and faculty with an OSU ID.

Stadium Auction to offer unique items

One-of-a-kind items removed during renovation of the Horseshoe will be on sale during an Ohio Stadium Auction, to be held at 4:30 p.m. April 28 in French Field House. The auction is in conjunction with the spring football game being held at 1:30 p.m. in Crew Stadium.

Lockers, coaches' chalkboards, signs and a unique helmet chair from the recruiting room are among the items on sale.

Panel to discuss court's ADA impact

A panel of local experts will discuss"The Americans With Disabilities Act: Current Status and Possible Futures" from 1 to 2:30 p.m. April 17 at Drinko Auditorium. The event is hosted by the Ohio State College of Law and the University ADA Coordinator's Office.

The panel includes Ken Campbell, director of disability and policy studies at the Nisonger Center; Ruth Colker, Heck Faust Memorial Chair in Constitutional Law at the College of Law; Stephen Kussisto, assistant professor of English and author of Planet of the Blind: A Memoir; and L. Scott Lissner, ADA coordinator at Ohio State.

Listen sessions to be sponsored by USAC

The University Staff Advisory Committee will be hosting listen sessions at various locations on Ohio State's Columbus and regional campuses during April and May. USAC gathers staff opinion in preparation for the annual Staff Compensation and Benefits Report presented to the University administration.

Listen sessions currently are scheduled for: April 13, 12:30-1:30 p.m., 305 Gerlach Hall; April 17, 11 a.m.-noon, 135 Bevis Hall; April 26, noon-1 p.m., Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, Fisher Auditorium exhibit area; May 8, noon-1:15 p.m., 135 Stillman Hall; May 11, noon-1 p.m., Lima, 212 Public Service Building; May 15, noon-1 p.m., Drinko Law Auditorium.

Fisher College offers Executive MBA

The Fisher College of Business is hosting information sessions for high-level managers interested in the college's new Executive MBA program. The new multidisciplinary curriculum is built around cross-functional, real-world issues faced by today's executives, using the latest in online instructional technology that enables students to prepare at their own pace for the monthly Thursday-through-Saturday sessions. The information sessions will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on April 20, May 18 and June 15, in 140 Pfahl Hall.

Fee being waived for new University ID

Lost University ID cards or those with outdated photos can be replaced for free through spring quarter as University ID Card Services waives the usual $15 replacement fee.

To get a new card, faculty and staff should visit the ID Center on the second floor of Lincoln Tower during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. They should bring an old ID card, or a driver's license or other photo identification if the University ID is lost.

Faculty and staff may also start a BuckID debit account, good for discounts for purchases made with the BuckID from campus area merchants and food vendors.

Proposals sought for Schoen Awards

Proposals are being sought for the Kathryn T. Schoen Awards, created to provide opportunities for professional growth and leadership for women in higher education. The awards will be presented June 18 at the 2001 Distinguished Staff and Kathryn T. Schoen Awards luncheon.

Two administrative and professional staff members with five years of continuous service will be granted awards, one of $2,500 and the other of $1,500. Awards may be used to enhance leadership and administrative abilities through internships, educational programs, travel or other experiences that promote professional development.

The application deadline is May 11. To apply, submit a proposal and budget, two letters of support (one from a department chair, dean, director or unit supervisor) and a resume to Molly Davis, Office of Academic Affairs, 203 Bricker Hall.

The spring course schedule for the Financial Planning Series offered by the Office of Human Resources is now online, with new free workshops for faculty and staff. Topics include investing, tax planning, insurance, home buying and estate planning. Volunteers sought for Women in Science

The Association for Women in Science of Central Ohio (AWISCO) has received the 2001 Making a Difference Award in the Government/Educational Institution category after a statewide competition sponsored by the Ohio Women's Policy and Research Commission. The citation honors AWISCO's educational efforts through the Women in Science Day program, held annually at Ohio State since 1981. Ohio State women faculty and staff in many scientific disciplines have participated.

Volunteers and presenters are needed for the next Women in Science Day to be held May 11 on campus.

Social Work promotes College Bound kids

University faculty and staff are eligible to receive a 5 percent tuition discount when they enroll their children in the Ohio State College Bound Summer Institute for Elementary and Middle School Students. College Bound, an outreach program of the College of Social Work, will take place June 3 through Aug. 17 on the Ohio State campus.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, with latchkey services available from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 5:30 p.m. The program offers a well-rounded schedule of academic and recreational activities for students beginning at age 6.

Managing HIV/AIDS is focus of forum

A free public forum to discuss healthy options for the management of HIV and AIDS will be held April 18 in Rhodes Hall Auditorium at the Medical Center. The forum starts at 6:30 p.m., with a reception at 5 p.m.

Michael Para, an infectious disease expert at the Medical Center, will provide a medical update on HIV and AIDS. The forum is sponsored by the OSU AIDS Clinical Trials Unit.

Couples needed for stress study

Married couples between the ages of 18 and 80 are needed for research on marriage, stress and wound healing. Research participants must be in good health and willing to spend 26 hours together on a hospital research unit on two separate occasions, as well as follow-up appointments.

Class focuses on coping with cancer

The JamesCare for Life monthly class,"Strength for Living: Managing the Side Effects of Cancer Treatment," will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 17 in 518A James Auditorium.

The guest speaker is Sheryl Miller, nurse educator with Ortho Biotech. The class is free and open to the public. Professional development credits will be awarded for attending.

Women & Knowledge sets luncheon series

The Women & Knowledge Luncheon Series 2001 will kick off April 24 at the YWCA with Peer Power, a peer outreach program that offers interactive presentations on gender-related topics to middle and high school students in the Columbus area. The session is titled"Barbie, GI Joe and Gender Stereotypes."

The series is sponsored by the Women & Knowledge Community Coalition. Other lectures in the series are:

  • May 9, Ara Wilson, assistant professor of women's studies, will present"Women Entrepreneurs and the Lessons of Gender."
  • May 23, Valerie Rake, lecturer in women's studies and a founding member of the University's Women in Technology organization, will deliver"At Home on the Net: Women, Gender and the Internet.

New Web site for advisers is unveiled

Student Activities and Campus Programs has developed a new Web site that lists resources to help faculty and staff in their role as advisers to student organizations at Ohio State. Adviser Web was unveiled on April 4 and can be accessed at www.osu.edu/student-activities/advisers.

There are more than 500 student organizations at Ohio State, each with a faculty or staff adviser to guide and mentor them as an organization. Since 1998, Student Activities and Campus Programs has worked to develop a comprehensive plan that combines elements of traditional and new approaches to advising and supporting student organizations.

Mizejewski to deliver Inaugural Lecture

Linda Mizejewski, professor of English, will present"Showgirls and Bodies of Evidence" at the College of Humanities' eighth Inaugural Lecture of the year, to be held at 7:30 p.m. May 1 in the Faculty Club. From burlesque queen to Ziegfeld Girl, the discussion will explore the showgirl's role in both popular culture and cultural studies. The talk is free and open to the public.

OSU East celebrates second anniversary

University Hospitals East will celebrate its second anniversary this month with a Community Day April 28, featuring a health fair, safety displays and neighborhood cleanup.

The hospital will host the annual Columbus Metropolitan Area Community Action Organization African-American health fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will participate in the cleanup of Taylor Avenue, which borders the hospital, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Cancer workshop looks at lymphedema

A JamesCare for Life program about lymphedema prevention, assessment and treatment will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 5 at the Wyndham Dublin Hotel.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition and considered to be one of the most significant long-term complications following lymph node dissection for a variety of cancers -- notably, breast cancer.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Undergrad math curriculum discussed

Donald O'Shea, Kennan Professor of Mathematics, dean of faculty and vice president for academic affairs at Mount Holyoke College, will discuss"Common Sense and the Undergraduate Mathematics Curriculum" at 4:30 p.m. April 17 in 724 Math Tower.

The lecture is part of the Ohio State Department of Mathematics Math 2001 Colloquium. A 3:30 p.m. reception will precede the talk.
