Hispanic 'Traditions of the Past' celebrated

"Stepping into the Millennium with the Traditions of the Past" is the theme for Ohio State's 23rd Annual Hispanic Awareness Month. The celebration of Hispanic culture continues through the end of April, and features a variety of events, including lectures, dance lessons and a multicultural conference April 20 and 21.

Events

April 13 -- Wellness Symposium 2001: Understanding Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Issues in Minority Communities, 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m., Room 150, Younkin Success Center. This symposium will help to explain why alcohol and drug abuses persist in Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American and American Indian communities, as well as examine culturally specific prevention strategies to deal with these problems. The schedule includes expert presentations.

April 18 -- The Role of Hispanic Women in Higher Education: Making it to the Top, 9 to 11 a.m., Hale Black Cultural Center. Nancy "Rusty" Barcelo, associate vice president for academic affairs and chair of the Chicano Studies Department at the University of Minnesota, will appear as part of the President and Provost's Diversity Lecture Series.

April 23 -- Michele Serros, 7 to 8 p.m., Ohio Union Conference Theatre. The author of How to Be a Chicana Role Model will share her insights and talk about her recent book.

April 26 -- Setting the Framework for Hispanics in Higher Education for the New Millennium, 9 to 11 a.m., Fawcett Center room 4. Manuel Pacheco, president of the four-campus University of Missouri system, will speak as part of the President and Provost's Diversity Lecture Series.

April 26 -- An Evening with John Quinones, 7 to 9 p.m., Rhodes Hall Auditorium. The award-winning ABC anchor will give a presentation, followed by a question-and-answer session.

April 27 -- Decolonizing Chicano History, 10 to 11:30 a.m., 1015 McPherson Laboratory. Emma Perez, associate professor of history at the University of Texas in El Paso, will discuss her recent book, Decolonial Imagery: Writing Chicanas into History (Theories of Representation and Difference).

April 30 -- Final Celebration of Hispanic Awareness Month 2001, 4 to 7 p.m., Ohio Union Main Lounge. Music will be provided by Yumbambe.

April 17 -- Student Panel on Latina Narratives, 4 to 5:15 p.m., Ohio Union Buckeye Rooms C/D/E. Ellen Gil-Gomez, senior lecturer in the Division of Comparative Studies, will facilitate.

April 19 -- Conversacion Pan Dulce y Chocolate, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., 436 Ohio Union, focusing on how cultural issues can affect climate and create multiple identities.

April 23 -- Chat with Michele Serros, author of How to Be a Chicana Role Model, 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., Kuhn Honors and Scholars House.

April 25 -- Career Opportunities in Dentistry: The Hispanic Health Care Provider, 5 to 7:30 p.m., 1183 Postle Hall.

April 27 -- Aerobics Latina-style, 4 to 5 p.m., Taylor Tower.

Conference

April 20 and 21 -- The Multi-Cultural Conference of Students: Images of You, Fawcett Center and Ohio Union. Presenters at this conference, designed to explore diverse ideas and philosophies through interactive sessions and social events, include New York Times columnist Steven Holmes and the MPAACT Afrikan Centered Theatre Group.

Disability Awareness Month raises awareness of disabilities

April is Disability Awareness Month, and Ohio State is celebrating with a number of events to raise the University's consciousness of the issues faced by people with disabilities.
