WOSU launches Auction34 fund-raiser

More than 500 central Ohio merchants have donated items that will be auctioned off during WOSU-TV's Auction 34!, airing April 25-28 and May 2-5. OSU marching band CDs, OSU ice rink passes, an autographed AC/DC electric guitar and a trip for two to South Africa will be among the items up for sale during WOSU's largest fund-raising event. Watch Auction 34! Spotlight at 7 p.m. May 1 on TV34 for a sneak peek at donated items and to bid early on selected items.

Volunteers needed for commencement

About 150 faculty, staff and student volunteers are needed to serve as ushers at the June 8 commencement ceremonies on the Oval. Duties will include distributing programs, showing guests to seats, providing directions to various buildings and campus areas, and generally assisting the visitors who have come to see family and friends receive their diplomas.

Volunteers should be able to attend rehearsal from 8 to 11 a.m. on June 7, and be on site from 7:30 a.m. to noon on June 8.

  • All faculty members planning to march in the academic processional at the June 8 commencement must notify their college dean's office by May 18. Faculty participating should report to Mershon Auditorium by 9:15 a.m. on commencement day to robe and assemble.

OARDC hosts annual Discovery Day

Rare and unusual plants will be featured on May 5 as the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster hosts the ninth annual Plant Discovery Day. The event, featuring plant sales, silent and oral auctions and children's activities, will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in and near Fisher Auditorium.

The event provides plants to the public that cannot be easily found in retail stores, and includes children's activities, including "critters up close," which allows children to look at insects, fungi, mosses and parts of a plant under a microscope.

ACCAD spring open house is May 4

The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) is hosting its annual spring open house from 4 to 7 p.m. May 4 at 1224 Kinnear Road. The event will feature a video review of computer animations, demonstrations of research and educational projects developed at ACCAD, and discussions with students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Arboretum to host sale, dedication

The Chadwick Arboretum will celebrate Arbor Day at 10 a.m. April 27 by dedicating the Jones Memorial Grove of native trees located west of Jerome Schottenstein Center and north of Lane Avenue. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Alumni House hosts CMC reception today

The Columbus Metropolitan Club is hosting a membership reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 26 at the Longaberger Alumni House to introduce the University community to CMC. CMC members, their guests and the public meet weekly to hear current issues that are key to central Ohio, presented by informed and prominent speakers. Finance Boot Camp planned for students

The Second Annual Personal Finance Boot Camp, a free event developed by students for undergraduate Ohio State students of all majors, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 28 in Schoenbaum Hall. The event provides information on investing, debt management, tax planning/filing, entrepreneurship and job offer negotiations. The keynote speaker will be Edward Jennings, William H. Davis Chair in the American Free Enterprise System and professor of finance at Fisher College, and former OSU president. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required.

CURA seminar series begins April 26

john a. powell, executive director of the Institute on Race and Poverty and professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School, will present "Can We Put the Polis Back in Metropolis? How the Status Quo Forecloses Racial and Economic Democracy" at 2 p.m. April 26 in Drinko Hall Auditorium.

This is the inaugural lecture in the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis' Establishing the Interdisciplinary Dialogue seminar series. An informal roundtable discussion will take place at 9 a.m. April 27 in room 385 Bricker Hall.

Where did that dog learn those lessons?

Ches, the dog featured in the April 12 onCampus in a story about Ohio State's Anxiety and Stress Disorders Clinic, prompted reader interest in his "professional" background. The newest member of the clinic, Ches was trained at Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). CCI trains dogs to assist people with physical or developmental disabilities. Ches helps patients at the Ohio State clinic overcome dog phobias. CCI is a national nonprofit organization with a local training center in Delaware.

Johnston to lecture on being mythic

Sarah Iles Johnston, professor of Greek and Latin, will present "The Importance of Being Mythic" at the College of Humanities' ninth Inaugural Lecture of the year, to be held at 7:30 p.m. May 8 in the Faculty Club. She will discuss the effects that Greek myth has had on her life, and sketch the roles that it can play in the contemporary academy.

Polymers focus of Smith Lecture

The public and the University community are invited to attend the annual Smith Lecture, sponsored by the Department of Physics and the Graduate School, at 8 p.m. May 2 in 131 Hitchcock Hall. Alan J. Heeger, physicist and 2000 Nobel Laureate in chemistry, will present, "The ÔPlastics Electronics' Revolution," a discussion of the importance of the discovery and development of conducting polymers.

Newark campus to offer sales seminar

Gary Sorrell, a recognized leader in sales and professional development, will lead a nine-session seminar, "Success in Sales," beginning May 2 at the Newark campus. The sessions are from 8 to 11 a.m. on consecutive Wednesdays.

Musical Chair'ity to benefit children

The Student-Alumni Council at Ohio State will be raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation as it attempts to organize the world's largest game of musical chairs, to be held at 1 p.m. May 5 on the Oval.

Registration for Musical Chair'ity begins at 11 a.m. There is a $5-per-chair registration fee, and participants must be 18 or older. With a goal of 9,000 participants, organizers are hoping to raise more than $40,000 for the charity. Donated prizes will be awarded to participants.

AIDSWalk pledge cards available

The Central Ohio AIDSWalk, a 4.5-mile pledge walk through downtown Columbus and the Short North that raises awareness for HIV/AIDS and funds for 10 local organizations, will be held May 6. Registration and festivities begin at 11 a.m. in Bicentennial Park. The walk begins at 2 p.m.

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) Ohio State Student Branch is presenting "Expanding Quality Horizons" from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 at the Ohio Union. ACCAD links girls and technology

Area high schools girls in ninth and 10th grade can experiment with high tech art and design possibilities this summer in the summerDesign + Technology program, a free, two-week program held on the Columbus campus. Funded by a grant from the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs, the program is the endeavor of Maria Palazzi, acting director of the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design at Ohio State. Students will work in small teams, directed by women mentors, using computer animation and Web technologies.

Participants sought for medical study

Participants are needed for a study at the University Medical Center on an investigational medication to treat children ages 7 to 17 who have attention-deficit hyperactivity with symptoms of depression or anxiety or a combination of all three disorders.

Ohio State's involvement in the study includes screenings to determine participants' exact disorder.

Hale Center observes 12th anniversary

The Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center will commemorate its 12th anniversary with a day of events on April 26. Activities include a workshop and panel discussion at the Fawcett Center at 9:30 a.m. and a town meeting at 2 p.m. at the Fawcett Center with Randall Robinson, author of The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks.

Leading African-American art authority David C. Driskell of the University of Maryland, College Park, will address the campus and community at 5:30 p.m. at the Hale Center.

Department hosts national symposium

The Department of African American and African Studies will sponsor a national symposium May 3-5 to celebrate 30 years of black studies. The theme is "Transforming our Discipline, Transforming Ourselves."

A number of noted panelists and speakers will attend to discuss topics ranging from the doctoral degree in black studies to globalization and the future of Africana studies.
