TELR schedules awareness events

Two Technology Enhanced Learning and Research Awareness Series events remain for the month of May. Upcoming events are:

  • May 15, Behind-the-Scenes of the Huntington Archives Data Base Project, 1:30 to 3 p.m., 120 Baker Systems Engineering. The Web Media Collective will present a detailed look at what makes an online digital media archive work, with a look at the "blueprints" for the archive and its development strategies.
  • May 23, Assessing Online Instruction, 1:30 to 3 p.m., 120 Baker Systems Engineering. Presented in partnership with the Faculty and TA Development Office, TELR Director Steve Acker and FTAD Director Alan Kalish introduce the "flashlight toolkit," a survey set and methodology appropriate for evaluating online instruction. Flashlight is now available through a site license at Ohio State.

Nominees sought for new ADA committee

An advisory committee is being established to advise and assist the ADA coordinator in shaping and evaluating the University's priorities for disability-related initiatives and improved access within the physical and social environment of the University. The committee's input will be included as part of an annual report to the University community on access and related issues.

The committee will include individuals with disabilities, representing students, faculty, staff and the general public. Members will serve a minimum of one academic year and meet monthly. Portions of the monthly meetings will be structured as a forum open to the campus community and general public.

Clarinet news no longer offered by OIT

The Office of Information Technology did not renew its subscription to Clarinet news because of dwindling numbers of users and the high cost of the service. Clarinet is a Usenet-based service that delivers daily newsfeeds in newsgroups that can be accessed with newsreader software.

Faculty, staff and student advisory committees consulted about the change supported the decision.

To subscribe directly to the fee-based service, visit the ClariNet Communications Corp. Web site at http://clarinet.com/.

Outreach Roundtable discussion is May 16

The next Outreach and Engagement Roundtable discussion will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 16 at the Ohio Union Stecker Lounge. Vice President for Outreach Bob Moser will share the insight and feedback gained from the recent Universitywide outreach conference. He also will lead a discussion focusing on the action steps to move forward the three outreach/engagement focus areas (P-12, health and safety, economic development), strengthening involvement of the community and plans for the coming year.

The program begins at noon. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch.

Photo exhibit, jazz mark AAAS events

Ohio State's African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave., will be hosting two events in May in honor of the department's 30-year anniversary.

  • A photo art exhibit and tribute to local photographer Kojo Kamau takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. May 24. Kamau is being honored for his photo contributions to the black community of Columbus. The event and reception are open to the public.
  • The center will host "Loot of Jazz," an afternoon of food, live music and vendor tables from noon to 7 p.m. May 25. Power 107-FM will feature a live broadcast from noon to 2 p.m. The event is free.

Workshop to discuss home-buyer incentives

Northside Development Corp. will hold a workshop at 6 p.m. May 22 to explain Ohio State's University District homeownership incentive program for faculty and staff. The program offers $3,000 in down payment assistance.

The workshop will provide information on real estate agents, financing, title companies and home inspections. Since the program began in mid-1998, more than 60 employees have bought homes in the University District with the down payment assistance.

The workshop will be held in room 100 of the Northwood-High Building, 2231 N. High St. Parking is available behind the building. Advance registration is not required.

Workshop explores medical grant writing

A grantsmanship workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to noon May 11 at the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute Auditorium. The workshop will include sessions on funding sources, National Institutes of Health (NIH) perspectives, clinical trials and a mock study section with a cast of former and current NIH study section members.

Somatic revolution subject of conference

The 11th Annual Somatics Conference will be held May 11-13 in Pomerene Hall. "The Somatic Revolution: The End of the Beginning" will explore changes in the study of the unity of the body, mind and spirit during the last 30 years. The conference, sponsored by the College of Education's School of Educational Policy and Leadership, is free, but registration is required.

Dinnerstein is Jewish studies lecturer

Leonard Dinnerstein, a professor at the University of Arizona, will deliver the 2001 Friends of the Melton Center Distinguished Humanist Lecture on "German and East European Jews: The Complexities of a Relationship, 1890-1948" at 7:30 p.m. May 20 at the Fawcett Center. The lecture, sponsored by the Melton Center for Jewish Studies, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

OLN adds career advice to Web site

The Ohio Learning Network (OLN) is now offering information about matching skills and interests to a new career in the "Explore Distance Learning" section of OLN's Web site, www.oln.org.

In addition to online career counseling, visitors to the site also can explore the OhioLEARNS catalog, a database of more than 1,000 courses offered by Ohio colleges and universities that can be completed over the Internet.

OLN is a consortium of Ohio's public and private colleges and universities and is an initiative of the Ohio Board of Regents.

Hooding ceremony to honor 2001 law grads

A hooding ceremony for the College of Law's Class of 2001 will take place at 1 p.m. May 13 at the Palace Theatre, 34 W. Broad St. A reception will follow at Columbus City Hall, 90 W. Broad St.

John Podesta, faculty member at Georgetown University Law Center and former White House chief of staff, will present the address. The ceremony also marks one of the last official events for Dean Gregory H. Williams, who is leaving Ohio State to become president of City College in New York.

Web tour explores Internet and ADA

A Web-based tour of methods and applications for improving electronic access for people with disabilities, "Surfing for Electronic Access," will take place May 15. The tour will explore the electronic access responsibilities for public services and public accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Participants being sought for HIV study

The University Medical Center is seeking participants for a study that will examine the risk behaviors of participants in HIV vaccine trials. The study, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control, will help develop a template for conducting future clinical trials of HIV prevention vaccines.

Labor Committee hosts town meeting

Sam Brown, executive director of the Fair Labor Association, will speak on "Ohio State and Social Responsibility in the Manufacturing of Licensed Products" at a town meeting May 14 in Hopkins Hall. The meeting is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and is sponsored by the Ohio State Labor Advisory Committee.

Course designed to aid chronically ill

A six-week course being offered by the University Medical Center is designed to help people with chronic illnesses take control of their lives. The course will meet from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays June 5 through July 16 at the OSU Center for Wellness and Prevention, 2050 Kenny Road.

The course is open to anyone with a chronic illness or friends and family of someone with a chronic illness. There is a small fee for course materials.

Take Back the Night march is May 17

The Columbus area Take Back the Night march will take to the streets on the Ohio State campus May 17, between Sullivant Hall and the Wexner Center for the Arts.

Held in cities across the United States, Take Back the Night is a rally, march and candlelight vigil created to speak out against all forms of violence against women and children.

This is the sixth consecutive Take Back the Night organized by the Association of Womyn Students at Ohio State. This year's event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with live music and performers, self-defense demonstrations, and information tables, followed by a rally at 7 p.m., the march at 9 p.m., and a candlelight vigil at 10 p.m.

Volunteers needed for OSU exercise study

Researchers at Ohio State are seeking volunteers to participate in a study of exercise, stress and wound healing among healthy older adults. Participants will complete a three-month exercise program, assessment of stress and exercise, and an experimental wound procedure.

To be eligible for the study, participants must be in good health and between the ages of 55 and 80. Compensation will include $50 and a free three-month aerobic exercise program at the Center for Wellness and Prevention.

Women at Play presents Still Lives

Women at Play will present Still Lives on May 18-20 and 25-27 (8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. on Sundays) at the Davis Discovery Center's Van Fleet Theatre, 549 Franklin Ave. The play is written by Women at Play members Anne Marie Brethauer, Katherine Burkman, Jane Cottrell, Linda Meadows, Cecily O'Neill, Marilyn Rofsky, and Ann Roth, and co-directed by Burkman.

The characters come alive from paintings in Act 1 and meet in the idyllic, Edenesque setting of the Seurat topiary in Act 2, where two of the topiary figures also come to life, and where there is a general encounter with the snake.
