onCampus accepting listings for GuideonCampus is now accepting submissions for the 2001-02 Guide, available Sept. 20. The Guide is a special edition of onCampus that provides space for departments to communicate news and services they would like faculty and staff to remember throughout the year. The Guide includes brief listings organized into several categories, including training and development, dining and shopping, health and wellness, travel and accommodations, arts and entertainment, financial services, University organizations, University services, and sports and recreation. Units may submit information to be listed at no charge. To receive a submission form, e-mail a contact name and phone number to oncampusguide@osu.edu by June 15 or call Susan Wittstock at 292-8419. Summer quarter hours begin June 11University summer hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. will begin June 11, with the normal 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours to resume Sept. 4. Offices serving students or the public that normally remain open on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. may stay open on an"as needed" basis, or may elect to discontinue extended hours for summer quarter. Medical Center hosts volunteer sign-up dayThe Department of Volunteer Services at the OSU Medical Center is hosting a Volunteer Sign-up Day from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 12 in 155 Doan Hall. Refreshments will be provided. Adult volunteers are needed for three- to four-hour sessions during many shifts, but primarily evenings and weekends. Business startup workshop offered"So...Are You Thinking About Starting A Business?" is a workshop for those with entrepreneurial aspirations. The workshop takes place from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 23 at the Longaberger Alumni House. Representatives from the business community will discuss characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, business and personal skills needed, time and financial commitment required, and the resources available to help you get started. The OSU Alumni Association and the Office of Continuing Education are sponsoring this workshop through the Career Exploration Office, along with the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). Web site promotes campus recyclingA new Web site for University recycling has been developed by staff at the Department of Physical Facilities to help Ohio State faculty, staff and students with recycling efforts. The site was developed in response to a growing interest in recycling on campus and a state mandate requiring recycling of a majority of University waste. JamesCare class will discuss cancerPatricia Schmitt, program director for JamesCare for Life: Comprehensive Oncology Rehabilitation, will be the guest speaker for the monthly class session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 19 in 518 James. This information and discussion session will highlight the special needs and issues of older adults with cancer. This lecture is free and open to the public. Humanities ceremony set for June 7Daniel Katz, board chairman and co-founder of the Rainforest Alliance, is the featured speaker at the College of Humanities Baccalaureate to be held at 3:30 p.m. June 7 in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. The event is free and open to the public. An alumnus of Ohio State, Katz co-founded the Rainforest Alliance in New York City in 1986, an organization that has certified millions of acres of forestland to date. He has received the Kellogg National Fellowship Program for Leadership (1989-92), the Ohio State College of Humanities Alumni Award of Distinction, and the Alumni Association William Oxley Thompson Award. During the ceremony, two Ohio State alumni will receive the Humanities Alumni Society (HUMAS) Alumni Awards of Distinction: College of Humanities alumni Tobi Skilken Gold (B.A. 1977, Jewish studies) and Samuel Walker (Ph.D. 1973, history). Candidates sought to direct new instituteA search committee is seeking applications and nominations for the position of director of the Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in the Americas (ISREA). Solove Research Institute is offering a three-part course for caregivers of cancer patients, to be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 21 and 28 and July 5 at the Medical Center's Battelle location. Classes will focus on planning ahead for positive, constructive problem solving for caregiving challenges, and learning care methods, including nutrition, nonmedical interventions for pain and safe mobility. Grant to expand Latin American collectionThe Department of Latin American Studies will apply $60,000 in Title VI funding received over the next three years to enhance the Language and Area Studies collection housed in the Main Library. The money makes it possible for the collection to acquire an additional 600 books, original manuscripts on microfilm, and CDs on topics such as Peruvian history and the classical works of the History of Latin America.
