Fisher College of Business partners with Arthur Andersen for business challenge

By Anna Rzewnicki

The Fisher College of Business at Ohio State and Arthur Andersen are offering teams of entrepreneurs with an Ohio State connection a chance to compete for at least $70,000 in start-up funds and services.

Through the Fisher College of Business/Arthur Andersen Business Plan Competition, teams will submit and be judged on plans describing a business concept, market opportunity, proposed competitive advantage, required resources and team member qualifications. Teams must include at least one OSU student.

Arthur Andersen and other partners in the competition have already committed funds to assure a $70,000 prize of cash and services for the winning prize, to be awarded in May 2001. Additional partners currently are Dow Chemical and Battelle.

"We have had a very positive response from the business community already," said Jay Barney, holder of the Bank One Chair for Excellence in Corporate Strategy and professor of management and human resources at Fisher College. "Discussions with additional potential sponsors are continuing and may result in a larger award."

Carl Nelson, with Arthur Andersen, said co-sponsorship of the Business Plan Competition is a natural extension of the company's strong relationship with Fisher College and Ohio State.

"In addition to recruiting from several colleges at Ohio State, Arthur Andersen has partnered with Fisher College and the University on such initiatives as the Central Ohio Business Consortium, of which Arthur Andersen and Ohio State are active members.

"Being involved with Ohio State is extremely important to Arthur Andersen," Nelson said. "The University is one of the best in the nation in terms of producing high-quality graduates, and Arthur Andersen is proud to be a part of furthering that educational experience with this exciting opportunity."

"A business plan competition is also a natural extension of the college's business management program,"Barney said. "It offers an excellent opportunity for individuals to develop their ideas into realistic business plans with the potential for success."

The business plan competition is not limited to students of the Fisher College of Business. "Innovation in business comes from all fields, so it is logical to open this competition to any student of Ohio State," said Joseph A. Alutto, dean of Fisher College. Competition rules require that at least one member of the team be an Ohio State student.

Participants in the competition won't be going it alone, though. Competition organizers have lined up a series of innovation and entrepreneurship workshops scheduled for October and November, with Fisher faculty and members of the Columbus entrepreneurship and venture capital communities covering such topics as:

  • developing a business plan concept;
  • creating a new venture management team;
  • evaluating the market potential of new technologies;
  • doing financial projections;
  • new venture marketing; and
  • writing a business plan executive summary.

Fisher College MBA students attending the workshops and completing other phases of the competition schedule stand to earn an extra bonus: academic credit. Business leaders interested in assisting with this effort are encouraged to contact Michael Hyzdu, also with Arthur Andersen, at 229-4205, who is working with Barney on the business plan competition.

The actual competition begins in January 2001 and ends with selection and announcement of the winning plan in May.

Following is the competition schedule:

January: Three-page executive summaries of the teams' business plans are due. The summaries briefly describe a team's business concept, market opportunity, proposed competitive advantage, required resources and team member qualifications. Each executive summary will be evaluated by judges drawn from the central Ohio entrepreneurship and venture capital communities. Up to 64 executive summaries will be selected for the next round. All summaries will be returned with comments to their teams.

April: Fully developed business plans are due. A team of at least three judges will evaluate each plan, narrowing the field to eight finalists and providing feedback to all teams. The finalists will have the opportunity to revise and resubmit their plans for the third phase of the competition.

May: Eight semi-finalist teams will submit revised business plans to the judging teams, followed by a formal presentation to the judges.

Late May: Judges will select the three best plans; one will be identified as the overall winner. The eight semi-finalists and three finalists will be recognized at a formal dinner in late May, at which the winning team will be announced. The winning team will present its business plan to all in attendance.

Complete rules and guidelines for the competition are available online at http://fisher.osu.edu/businessplan. The Web site will include updates on prizes and sponsors as well as an Entrepreneur Exchange, an online meeting place for individuals interested in forming a team and teams seeking individuals with specific expertise.
