Lecture features author Larry Davis

"Color and Class: Implications for 21st Century Social Work" is the theme of the 2000 O'Leary Memorial Lecture. Hosted by the College of Social Work, the lecture takes place at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Fawcett Center Theater. A reception will follow at 6:30 p.m.

The speaker is Larry E. Davis, the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Racial and Ethnic Diversity at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University. He is the author of Working with African American Males: A Guide to Practice; Black and Single; and Ethnic Issues in Adolescent Mental Health.

Event explores teleconferencing

The world's first totally remote-by-Internet conference track on the use of teleconferencing in research and education will take place during Megaconference II, to be held from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. Oct. 31, in conjunction with the Fall 2000 Internet2 Member Meeting being held Oct. 30-Nov. 1 in Atlanta.

Through Internet videoconferencing, speakers from all over the world will describe their real-world applications of H.323 videoconferencing. Bob Dixon, chief research engineer for the Office of the Chief Information Officer, organized the event.

Controller moves to Blankenship Hall

Diversity award nominations sought

Nominations are being sought for the annual Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Awards, sponsored by the University Senate Committee on Diversity and the Office of Human Resources. The award is designed to recognize individuals or groups that have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity at Ohio State and within the community.

The 2001 award recipients will be honored at a reception, where they will receive a plaque and a $1,200 honorarium. The nomination deadline is Nov. 17.

Medical Career Fair scheduled for Nov. 3

Careers in health care will be featured during the School of Allied Medical Professions' Career Fair from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 in Meiling Hall.

Allied Medicine offers undergraduate majors in athletic training, circulation technology, medical dietetics, medical technology, health information management, occupational therapy, radiologic technology and respiratory therapy, and a graduate degree in physical therapy. The free fair will include a panel discussion with students from each discipline.

Gala to recognize Parkinson's Disease

The Parkinson's Disease Center of Excellence at the Ohio State Medical Center will hold its third annual Parkinson's Disease Recognition Gala at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Columbus Zoo Pavilion. Andrea Cambern of WBNS-TV will be the master of ceremonies for the event, which will focus on "Understanding Today's Research." The evening will feature dinner, dancing and a silent auction.

OAA seeks teaching award nominations

The Office of Academic Affairs has issued a call for nominations of outstanding faculty for the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.

All teaching faculty on full-time appointment, with the rank of instructor through professor, are eligible. The nomination deadline is Nov. 6.

OSC hosts Internet privacy conference

The Ohio Supercomputer Center and the Technology Policy Group will host "PRIVACY 2000: Are Privacy and the Free Flow of Information Incompatible?" Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Adam's Mark Hotel. The conference is an opportunity for business and government leaders, consumers, decision-makers and practitioners to discuss privacy issues and the Internet.

Coaches' wives to sponsor food drive

The wives of the Ohio State football coaching staff are sponsoring Buckeye Battle Against Hunger, a canned food drive benefiting the Mid-Ohio FoodBank. The Buckeyes' Nov. 4 game against Michigan State has been designated as the drop-off day, when food can be placed in bins around Ohio Stadium and St. John Arena. Area Kroger stores also will accept food through Nov. 4.

Cancer education sessions planned

The James Cancer Hospital and the American Cancer Society will host the autumn session of "I Can Cope" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 4 and 11. The group education sessions for adults with cancer and their family members and friends will be held at the Stoneridge Medical Center, 4019 W. Dublin-Granville Road.

Women at Play performances set

Women at Play, a group of 10 women who write collaboratively and produce their own plays as well as those of others, are presenting three short plays by Irish playwright Samuel Beckett at the Davis Youth Complex for the Arts, 1755 E. Broad St. Dates and times are at 8 p.m. Oct. 26-28, and 2 p.m. Oct. 29. The plays are Come and Go, Not I and Play.

Defense secretary to speak on campus

U.S. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen will speak on "Assuring American Security in the Twenty-First Century" at 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Fawcett Center.

The speech, sponsored by The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy, is the first in a new lecture series titled "Odyssey 2000: New Issues for a New Century." Talks in the series will examine the changing faces of public policy issues in the world today. The recent crisis in the Middle East and the attack on the USS Cole give new urgency to the defense issues Cohen will discuss.

Seminar to focus on epilepsy and family

The effect of epilepsy on family life is the focus of a seminar set for Nov. 11 at the Holiday Inn on the Lane. Sponsored by the Epilepsy Foundation of Central Ohio, the seminar will include presentations by Jim McAuley, College of Pharmacy, and Layne Moore and Lucretia Long, Department of Neurology.

The cost of the luncheon program is $5 with prior registration and $15 for professionals. Continuing education credits in pharmacy and social work will be offered.

The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education (ENC) is hosting "Planning for Results: An Authentic Task Approach Institute" for 100 leaders in mathematics and science education Oct. 27-31 at 1929 Kenny Road. Institute participants will work on a real problem chosen by their organizations and, in the process, learn how to be more effective professionally.
