OSURF PI Portal training availableThe Research Foundation is continuing to conduct informal PI Portal training sessions. The PI Portal is a Web-based system that provides principal investigators, department chairs, deans and their designees with secure access to up-to-date financial information about active projects. Opera star to present lecture, workshopLiu Jing, a well-known Chinese opera performer in the Northern Kunqu style of opera, will present a multimedia lecture and workshop Jan. 25 in 100 Independence Hall. The lecture is from 12:30 to 1:18 p.m.; the workshop is from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Jing will introduce the basics of Chinese opera, including demonstrations of singing, speaking, foot movements and gestures. Orthodontic Clinic has expanded hoursThe College of Dentistry Graduate Orthodontic Clinic has expanded clinic hours to include Tuesday mornings, supervised by Henry Fields, who recently returned to full-time faculty status after serving as dean of the college for 10 years. The clinic, located on the first floor of Postle Hall, offers comprehensive orthodontic treatment (braces) for children and adult members of the OSU community. New patient screenings are performed on a walk-in basis on Friday mornings and select other days with patient registration from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Screenings are being offered on the following dates through March: Jan. 25; Feb. 1, 8 and 15; and March 8, 15 and 29. For further screening dates, call the clinic's information line at 292-9100. Computer worker eye care is lecture topicThe Institute for Ergonomics is sponsoring a winter quarter lecture, "Solving Vision and Eye Problems of Computer Workers," from 11 a.m. to noon Feb. 8 in 263 Dreese Laboratories. Delivering the lecture is Jim Sheedy, associate professor of optometry. He is a recognized expert in visual performance and visual symptoms, and has participated in the development of standards and regulations with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the International Standards Organization (ISO), and several government agencies. Gergen is Glenn Institute speaker Feb. 5David Gergen, former adviser to four U.S. presidents -- Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton -- and co-director of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard's Kennedy School, will deliver a lecture on the future of leadership during a visit to Ohio State on Feb. 5. The lecture, part of the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy's "Odyssey 2000+ New Issues for a New Century" series, begins at 4 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium. A reception on the Mershon stage will follow at 5 p.m. Gergen is editor-at-large of U.S. News & World Report and the author of Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton. Students seek support for dance marathonStudents are seeking support from faculty and staff for BuckeyeThon, a fund-raiser for Children's Hospital in which students will raise money by participating in a 26-hour nonalcoholic dance party. The event will start at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Ohio Union. Faculty and staff are asked to get involved by making an online donation and by encouraging students to participate in the event. Student TV program taping is Jan. 25A group of Ohio State students will tape the first segment of O'Sizzle, a variety television show, from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Ohio Union Conference Theatre. Doors open at 3 p.m. and close at 3:45 in advance of the taping. O'Sizzle will feature a talent showcase, a discussion panel, and appearances by radio personalities Sean Anthony, Keith Jones and Sly Tay. Approximately 150 students have joined to organize the program. Four tapings over winter and spring are planned to date. The program eventually will air on Columbus' community access channel and on the UNITS channel serving OSU. |
