OSU women collaborate on original drama playing at the Riffe Center
Women at Play, a group of 10 women -- including five faculty members from Ohio State -- who write and produce their own plays, present the world premiere of their original drama "She of the Lovely Ankle" beginning Feb. 21 at the Riffe Center Studio Three Theatre. The group includes Linda Meadows, assistant vice president for research and professor of education; Katherine Burkman, professor emerita of English; Cecily O'Neill, professor emerita of education; and Martha Lovely and Cathy Ryan, lecturers in English. Set in the offices of a large corporation, the drama is a modern version of the Greek myth about the abduction of Demeter's daughter Persephone by Hades to his underworld realm. UFSAP offers Anger Management sessionThe University Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (UFSAP) is offering a newly developed Anger Management Counseling and Skill Building Program. OSU-WID presents Hyun Sook KimHyun Sook Kim, associate professor of sociology and women's studies at Wheaton College, will deliver "War, Gender Conflicts, and Inter-National Reconciliation" from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center. The lecture is presented by OSU-Women in Development. Those attending are asked to bring their own lunch. Taking post-colonial relations between Vietnam and South Korea as a case in point, Kim will discuss the current dilemmas concerning violent history, wartime memories, gendered and localized memorialization, and possibilities for intra- and inter-national reconciliation. Prior library displays neuroscience historyA display of artwork now on display at the Ohio State Medical Center depicts scientists' growing understanding over the past several centuries of the human brain and the field of neuroscience. The collection "Art of Neuroscience: Image and Understanding, 1518-2000" is on display through June 30 in the fifth floor Medical Heritage Center of the Prior Health Sciences Library, 376 W. 10th Ave. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 1-5 p.m. weekdays. Borlaug to discuss agriculture Feb. 21-22Nobel Laureate Norman Borlaug, considered the father of the "Green Revolution," will present seminars at Ohio State on Feb. 21-22. Borlaug will present "Prospects for World Agriculture in the 21st Century" at 4 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Fawcett Center, and at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in Fischer Auditorium at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster. Both seminars are free and open to the public. Borlaug is an agricultural researcher who developed a high yielding short-strawed disease-resistant wheat that sparked the production movement which swept the globe during the 1960s and helped lift countries such as India and Pakistan out of starvation. Creative Writing offers Rawlings readingThe OSU Creative Writing Program will present a free, public reading with Wendy Rawlings, winner of the 2000 Sandstone Prize for Short Fiction, at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in Denney Hall. Rawlings is an assistant professor of English at the University of Alabama. Her recent fiction includes "Batcatching," The Bellingham Review; "I'm from Ballymullet," The Atlantic Monthly; and "Heteroworld," Colorado Review. Campaign begins for Ohio 4-H CenterA statewide campaign and fund-raising drive for an Ohio 4-H Center will officially kick off March 9 during the annual 4-H Volunteer Conference held in Columbus. Contributions from the Ohio Farm Bureau and Nationwide Insurance Foundation, and the efforts of the Friends of 4-H Committee have helped to move the $12 million fund-raising effort forward. The center will be the first of its kind in any land-grant University system and will provide training for volunteer leaders.
