Ohio State hosts disability conference

Ohio State is hosting this year's Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion, & Disability conference April 11-12 at the Fawcett Center.

OSU, ADA-OHIO, and the Great Lakes ADA and Information Technology Center are teaming up to present 25 workshops exploring the many facets of disability. The conference is intended as a catalyst for collaboration between the University and its partners in business, government, education and the community at large. To encourage participation, sponsors have provided a 90 percent subsidy in the registration costs.

This year's theme, "Disability In Context," ties together a wide range of presentations. Disability studies, employment, housing, architecture, education, health care and recreation are among the topics represented. Workshop presenters were drawn from both scholarly and applied settings.

Presenters from the field include representatives of the U.S. Access Board, Independent Living Centers, the Department of Education's Office For Civil Rights, the EEOC, the Department of Health and Human Services, nonprofit organizations and the Ohio Civil Rights Commission.

Scholars include Brenda Brueggemann, Ohio State; Susan Burch, Gallaudet University; Ruth Colker, Ohio State; Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Emory University; Georgina Kleege, author; Steve Kuusisto, Ohio State; and Timothy Lillie, University of Akron.

USAC application deadline nears

The University Staff Advisory Committee (an advisory board to the president on nonacademic, staff-related issues and concerns) is now accepting membership applications until April 5 for 11 three-year appointments. Jennings to deliver annual Bailey Lecture

President Emeritus and Professor of Finance Edward H. Jennings will deliver "Leading from the Heart" at 3:30 p.m. April 11 at the Fifth Annual Lena C. Bailey Lecture on Leadership. Sponsored by the College of Human Ecology, the event will be held in the Campbell Hall auditorium. A reception will follow in the Columbia Gas Student and Alumni Center of Campbell Hall.

Shackelford to address Women's Club lunch

Thekla R. Shackelford, educational consultant and co-chair of the University's Affirm Thy Friendship Campaign, will deliver "Women in Philanthropy: Leaving a Legacy" April 1 at the University Women's Club monthly lunch program. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.; the program starts at 12:30 p.m.

Starting a business workshop is April 13

A Starting Your Own Business workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon April 13 at the Longaberger Alumni House for people who dream of starting their own business. The Career Exploration Office has invited representatives from the business community to discuss characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, business and personal skills needed, time and financial commitment required, and resources available to help you get started.

Spring football game tickets now on sale

Tickets for the April 27 Ohio State spring football game in Ohio Stadium are currently available exclusively on the Web at www.hangonsloopy.com. Tickets for the 1:30 p.m. contest are $5 each. All seats are unreserved. The Department of Athletics will donate $1 from each ticket sold to the Central Ohio Food Bank.

This will be the first Scarlet and Gray game in Ohio Stadium since 1998. Players and coaches will be available for photographs and autographs prior to the game. A time and location for that session will be announced later.

Creative Writing hosts April 4 program

The OSU Creative Writing Program Student/Faculty Creative Reading Series is presenting an evening of prose and poetry with Michelle Herman, Benjamin Vogt and Kelly Magee from 7-8:30 p.m. April 4. The event will be held in 311 Denney Hall.

Swartz to present Inaugural Lecture

Michael Swartz, professor of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, will present "Else" in the College of Humanities' seventh Inaugural Lecture of the year, at 4:30 p.m. April 23 at the Faculty Club. Swartz will discuss ancient Judaism and how the study of such phenomena as esoteric ritual practices, the cultivation of memory, and ancient theories of sacrifice can uncover modes of thought that turn out to be pervasive in pre-modern societies and in turn shed light on today's society.

International Affairs grants available

The Office of International Affairs is soliciting applications from faculty who are proposing to: collaborate with foreign scholars in preparing a research grant proposal; participate in a faculty-exchange program; develop agreements linking OSU to major foreign institutions; or complete a manuscript jointly authored with a foreign-based scholar. Grants range between $1,500 and $2,000, with a maximum of $3,000.

Grants of up to $5,000 are available to support interdisciplinary lectures, seminar series or conferences on topics relevant to areas of the world outside the United States.

The application deadline for both grants is April 12. Applications are available from the Office of International Affairs at 300 Oxley Hall, or from the OIA Web site at www.osu.edu/oia.

Cancer caregiver session begins April 2

Referrals are now being accepted for an eight-week session of "For the Caregivers," an emotional support group for family members, partners and friends of loved ones with cancer.

The session is designed to help participants increase coping skills and reduce stress; share support with those in similar situations; recognize the importance of healthy self-care while being a caregiver; and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

The group will meet from 6-7:30 p.m. weekly beginning April 2, at the Griswold-Worthington Senior Center, 777 High St. There is no fee to participate, but registration is required. To register or for additional details, call The James Line at 293-5066 or (800) 293-5066, or Pat Schmitt at 293-4426.

Dow CEO to address annual EMSI workshop

Michael Parker, president and CEO of Dow Chemical Co., will deliver the keynote address, "Sustainable Development" at 2 p.m. April 5 during the Ohio State Environmental Molecular Science Institute's (EMSI) first annual workshop. The workshop, held April 3-5, will highlight current environmental research.

Workshops will be held in the Pfahl Executive Education and Conference Center, while a banquet takes place from 6:30-10 p.m. April 4 at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Fashion Lecture Series continues April 11

Edward F. Maeder, curator of Textiles at Historic Deerfield, Mass., and an internationally known lecturer and author, will speak on "Hollywood and History: Costume Design in Film Revisited" at the second lecture in a series presented by Ohio State's Historic Costume and Textiles Collection. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 11 at the Arena Grand Theater, 175 Nationwide Blvd.

Tressel signs up for Alzheimer's charity

Ohio State Head Football Coach Jim Tressel will appear at a Spring Preview and Tailgate Party April 10 to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. The event will be held from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility, and is emceed by Jack Park.

Activities include a tailgate luncheon, silent auction and an "Ask the Coach" session hosted by WBNS 10-TV's Jeff Hogan.

Ergonomics hosts spring workshop

The Ohio State Institute for Ergonomics is hosting the Spring 2002 Ergonomics Short Course on the Columbus campus from 8:30 a.m. April 30 to noon May 3. The course combines the fundamentals of biomechanics and cognitive engineering, provides a solid foundation for certification and practice in ergonomics, and enables participants to effectively modify and design work environments and products to better accommodate the capabilities and limitations of employees.

University District lunch session March 21

Wanda Dillard and Rebecca Nelson of University Hospitals are the guest speakers for a University District Lunch Bunch brown bag session from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 21. The session is held at the Campus Partners conference room, 1824 N. High St. The discussion will focus on the hospital's strategies and goals for developing "Intensive Caring" values within the community.

Chasser to discuss U.S. agency issues

Anne Chasser, chief operating officer of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and former director of Trademark and Licensing Services at Ohio State, is the guest speaker at an April 16 luncheon at the Faculty Club. The event is sponsored by the Association of Faculty and Professional Women (AFPW). Chasser will discuss how her agency deals with some of the current political issues in Washington, and how these issues are evolving and will affect life in the federal government.

Tobacco cessation session starts April 3

The Ohio State Medical Center's KickIt! Tobacco Cessation program is starting its next group session from 6:30-8 p.m. April 3 at Battelle, 1375 Perry St. The five-week group sessions are facilitated by a hospital-based wellness and prevention specialist, and are followed by two weeks of individual telephonic intervention.

Seminar to explore business in Russia

"Business in Russia: Then and Now," a seminar by Rodger K. Henn, owner of Import Specialist of Cincinnati will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. March 26 at the Fawcett Center. Henn, who has been marketing Russian products for 10 years and has made 33 trips to the region, will share his experiences with the central Ohio community.

Executives to discuss consumer relations

Executives of five Columbus-headquartered companies will discuss "How to Enhance Business/Customer Relationships to Promote Economic Recovery" from 8-9 p.m. April 9 at Ohio State's Thurber Theatre in the Drake Performance and Event Center. The event is sponsored by the student chapter of the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals and will address issues important to those building a future in consumer relations.

Managers to be trained for reduction in force

Managers, supervisors and Human Resource professionals are invited to attend Reduction in Force Training Sessions to be held from 1-5 p.m. March 25 and from 8 a.m. to noon on April 8.

The sessions will provide an overview of the University's new severance program and reduction in force guidelines; the support available through the reduction period; retention strategies for remaining staff; and how to conduct reduction in force meetings.
