Notables

Campbell promoted in HR

The Office of Human Resources (OHR) has announced that Nancy Campbell has been appointed as assistant vice president for human resources, effective June 1.

In this newly created role, Campbell's key responsibility will be to advance OHR's goal of being a model administrative unit -- she will focus on clarity of priorities, action planning, allocation of resources, integration of projects and core services, communications, staff development and other related areas. Campbell and OHR's directors will manage projects and services to ensure that OHR is organized to deliver on strategic priorities and core services with extremely high reliability and certainty.

With Campbell handling many internal responsibilities, Associate Vice President Larry M. Lewellen will be able to focus on external relationships and critical strategic priorities and ensure that OHR projects and services are connected to the University's leadership agenda.

"I am particularly proud to have Nancy Campbell accept this position. She is deeply talented and well-respected Universitywide, and has repeatedly proven her value to Ohio State," Lewellen said. "She has the very strong and universal support of the OHR staff."

Campbell has a Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership from Ohio State. She served as director of the Organization and Human Resource Development department for 10 years. Her areas of expertise are change management, performance management, leadership/executive assessment and feedback, career development and quality improvement.

Schoen recipients named

Two Ohio State faculty members have been selected to receive the University's 2002 Kathryn T. Schoen Awards to advance their professional interests in higher education administration.

The recipients are Mardi C. Hastings, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Biomedical Engineering Center, and Amanda M. Termuhlen, associate professor of clinical pediatrics in the College of Medicine and Public Health.

Hastings will use the grant to participate in a month-long internship under the guidance of Ilene Busch-Vishniac, dean of the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, just before the beginning of Ohio State's 2002-03 academic year. Busch-Vishniac is one of only four women engineering deans in the country.

Hastings seeks to observe the Whiting School's joint administration of its biomedical engineering department and undergraduate degree program with the Johns Hopkins College of Medicine, and to learn more about resource allocation and management; the roles of faculty administrators as associate deans; development and implementation of long-term plans; and large-scale K-12 mentoring programs in math, science and engineering for students underrepresented in those disciplines.

Termuhlen, also director of the Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Program at Children's Hospital, will apply her grant toward the cost to attend the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar. The conference is designed to enhance participants' skills and knowledge related to academic and organizational leadership, help them develop an agenda for professional development goals, and allow them to network and establish mentoring relationships with role models and colleagues.

Termuhlen intends to apply the broad professional development opportunity to her academic and research career and her administrative role at Children's Hospital, as well as in her capacity as the AAMC's women's liaison officer to Ohio State's College of Medicine and Public Health, where she seeks to promote development programs for women faculty.

The Schoen awards are presented, in alternate years, to women faculty members or administrative and professional staff at Ohio State and were made possible by an endowment from Schoen. A leader in higher education, Schoen, then a member of the faculties of the colleges of Education, Medicine, and Social and Behavioral Sciences, chaired the 1970 Universitywide study to assess the status of women at Ohio State. Now retired, she became the University's first woman vice president when she was appointed to lead educational services in 1978.

The 2002 award proposals were reviewed and recipients selected by Alex Collier, associate professor of psychology; Olga Esquivel-Gonzalez, associate director of consulting services in the Office of Human Resources; Kay Halasek, associate provost and director of University Honors and Scholars and associate professor of English; Mary Ann Sagaria, interim director and associate professor in the School of Educational Policy and Leadership; and Barbara Snyder, vice provost for academic policy and human resources and Joanne W. Murphy/Class of 1965 Professor of Law.
