Events observe disability employment awareness

Ohio State is sponsoring several events in recognition of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Events include:

  • Oct. 3, Access, Advocacy, Achievement: Transition Issues, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Fawcett Center. The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, the Ohio Department of Education and Ohio State are presenting a free, public workshop designed to assist students in transitioning from high school to college, vocational, technical or proprietary schools, or to employment. An overview of rights and responsibilities under the ADA will form the basis for question-and- answer sessions with participants.   • Oct. 10, Dancing Wheels Performance, reception 4-5 p.m., performance 5-6 p.m., Wexner Center. A professional, integrated dance company comprised of dancers with and without disabilities. Stores Department launches new Web site

OSU's Stores Department is launching a new Web site, designed to allow University customers the convenience of acquiring supplies and services through one source.

Oct. 10 features lecture, Women's Reception

The President and Provost's Diversity Lecture Series continues Oct. 10 with a presentation by Joyce Fletcher, professor of management at Simmons College and a senior research scholar at Wellesley College.

Fletcher will speak on "Disappearing Acts: Gender, Power and Relational Practice at Work" at 3 p.m. in the Ohio Union Conference Theatre. Her lecture is sponsored by The Women's Place, Women's Studies and Women Student Services.

In all, 11 speakers are part of the series this year, which will address issues of multiculturalism. For details, visit the Web at www.osu.edu/diversity/.

The annual Fall Women's Reception will follow Fletcher's lecture, running from 4-6 p.m. in the Ohio Union Main Lounge.

The reception is a celebration of all women at Ohio State and is a way to welcome new staff, faculty and students to campus.

Work/Life Survey winners announced

The Presidential Commission on Staff Development and Work/Life extends its thanks to staff members who participated in the Commission on Staff Development and Work/Life Survey.

Congratulations also are in order for those who completed the survey and also won football tickets from the Department of Athletics through a drawing: Jon Gear, Housing, Food Services and Event Centers; Susan Au Arnold, Wexner Center for the Arts; Daniel Carney, School of Architecture; Lynda Heyl, Development; Thomas Conger, College of Engineering; and Bryant Chambers, OARDC.

The commission will share survey results with the University community during winter quarter.

Critical Difference for Women offers grants

Applications are being accepted for the Critical Difference for Women 2001-02 Professional Development Grants for Women and Women of Color Advancement Grants.

The Professional Development for Women Grant program facilitates the professional development and career mobility of women. The Women of Color Advancement Grants assist faculty, staff and graduate student women of color in their participation in professional development activities and networks.

The awards for each grant can be up to $500. The application deadline is Oct. 26.

JamesCare presents pain management class

Costantino Benedetti, professor of anesthesiology, will discuss "Pain and Symptom Management" when the JamesCare for Life monthly class meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 9 in 518A James Auditorium. The class is free and open to the public.

Professional development hours will be awarded to registered nurse and social work staff who register and attend.

Creative Writing offers two readings

The OSU Creative Writing Program will present a student/faculty reading, "An Evening of Prose and Poetry," with Andrew Hudgins, Terri Goveia and Alis Sandosharaj. The event is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 4 in 311-313 Denney Hall.

The program also will present poet Dana Gioia at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in 311-313 Denney Hall. Gioia has published two collections of poems, Daily Horoscope and The Gods of Winter, and the nationally acclaimed essay, "Can Poetry Matter?" He also co-founded the West Chester University summer conference on form and narrative.

Annual Technology Expo is Oct. 9

University Retail Services and the Office of the Chief Information Officer are sponsoring Technology Expo 2001, to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Ohio Union Ballrooms. Visitors will learn about the latest in technology trends and solutions that are shaping education's future.

Exhibits include network and enterprise computing; digital multifunctional equipment; research, learning and business resources; computers and software; and the office and classroom of the future.

Geography seminar scheduled for Oct. 11

A Geography Colloquium Series will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Oct. 11 in 1080 Derby Hall. Refreshments will be served beginning at 3:15 p.m. The guest speaker is Basil Gomez of Indiana State University. All are welcome.

Women's Club hosts Dispatch columnist

Dispatch columnist Mike Harden will deliver "Look Who's Talking" Oct. 1 at the Faculty Club as the University Women's Club kicks off its monthly lunch program series. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.; the program starts at 12:30 p.m.

Established in 1895, the UWC is composed of faculty, faculty wives and staff, and is recruiting members from the community at large. One of its main goals is to raise money for the UWC scholarship fund, which provided scholarships to 33 students in 2001. Membership dues are $20 per year.

Rape Prevention offers free self-defense course

The Ohio State Rape Education and Prevention Program is offering free self-defense courses this fall, open to all women in the Columbus community. The five-week course will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ohio Union Gray Room H on consecutive Saturdays beginning Oct. 6; and from 6 to 8 p.m. in Pomerene Hall on consecutive Thursdays beginning Oct. 4.

Arboretum lecture explores labyrinths

The Rev. Lauren Artress, president and founder of Veriditas -- The World-Wide Labyrinth Project, will present "Why Labyrinths? A history of the labyrinth and its significance today" at 2 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Agricultural Administration Building. Following the lecture, those attending will visit the Chadwick Arboretum labyrinth. Dessert and beverages will be provided.

Admission is $8 for students, $14 for Friends of OSU Chadwick Arboretum and $20 for nonmembers.

OSU-COTA contract focus of open forum

The OSU-COTA Advisory Committee and the COTA/PAC Committee, a new student organization concerned with mass transit awareness and issues for Ohio State, will be holding an annual open forum meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 in 162 Hopkins Hall. Representatives from the University, Transportation and Parking, COTA and Project Mainstream will be on hand to address questions and concerns about the OSU-COTA transit contract and services. The meeting is open to students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be available.

Faculty Club luncheon looks at court system

Bradley Frick, attorney and Ohio State alumnus, will deliver "Courts in the 21st Century: How They Really Work" on Oct. 2 as the Faculty Club kicks off this year's Lunch and Learn series. A buffet lunch begins at 11:30 a.m.; the presentation starts at noon. Nonmembers are welcome.

The Lunch and Learn series will continue on Oct. 10 with a Columbus Zoo presentation.

Coach Burns leads cancer fund-raiser

OSU Women's Basketball Coach Beth Burns will host "Bounce for Bucks" Sept. 30 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The event raises money for innovative breast cancer research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Burns will lead the crowd on a 1.5- mile dribble around campus and back to the Schottenstein Center for games, refreshments and basketball clinics.

Montgomery to speak at AFPW luncheon

Betty Montgomery, attorney general for the state of Ohio, is the guest speaker Oct. 31 as the Ohio State Association of Faculty and Professional Women presents a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge.

The AFPW is committed to mentoring, networking and assisting with special projects in the University community, such as the Annual Women's Reception and Take a Daughter to Work Day. Faculty and professional women are encouraged to join for the 2001-02 year.
