Creative Writing brings in top authors for reading series

The OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series will present two distinguished authors in October. The public readings will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the Department of English Commons Room, 311-313 Denney Hall.

Appearing Oct. 18 is Jennifer Clarvoe, author of Invisible Tender, chosen by J.D. McClatchy as the first winner of the Poets Out Loud Prize. She also was honored with the 2001 Kate Tufts Discovery Award. Her work has appeared in The Ohio Review, The Partisan Review, Poetry Northwest, Raritan, The Yale Review and other journals. She teaches at Kenyon College and is the director of the Ohio Poetry Circuit.

David Wagoner

Appearing Oct. 23 is Massillon native David Wagoner, whose books of poetry include Traveling Light: Collected and New Poems; Walt Whitman Bathing; Through the Forest: New and Selected Poems; and First Light. His latest work, The House of Song, will be published in 2002. He also is the author of 10 novels. Wagoner has received an American Academy of Arts and Letters award, the Sherwood Anderson Award and the Fels Prize, among others, and fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Library renovation forums scheduled

Open meetings are scheduled for Oct. 15 and 16 in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge to discuss the latest draft plans for the Main Library renovation project. An open meeting for University Libraries faculty and staff is being held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 15; and for all University faculty, staff and students from 9:30-11:30 a.m. or from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Oct. 16.

Medical Center offers help for smokers

A five-week Kick It! Tobacco Cessation and Intervention Program offered by The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute begins Oct. 18. Classes are held on consecutive Thursdays, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Battelle, 1375 Perry St. (building #3, third floor, room 3).

The five-week program is facilitated by a hospital-based wellness and prevention specialist in a supportive group setting. Two weeks of individual telephonic intervention will immediately follow the group sessions.

Education buyers conference is Oct. 24

The 62nd Annual Ohio National Association of Educational Buyers Conference and Vendor Exhibition is coming to the Ohio State campus this fall. Hosted by the Purchasing Department, the conference includes vendor exhibits located in the Ohio Union from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 24. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Mosley-Thompson presents at colloquium

Ellen Mosley-Thompson, professor of geography and research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center, will deliver "Deciphering Earth's Climate and Environmental History from Ice Cores" at the next Geography Colloquium research presentation, to be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Oct. 23 in 1080 Derby Hall. Refreshments will be served beginning at 3:15 p.m.

School of Music offers lessons for K-12

The School of Music and the Jefferson Academy of Music are offering "Jefferson at OSU -- Pre-College Music" again this year in Hughes Hall. The program is a comprehensive mix of private and group lessons, musicianship classes, chamber music and performance opportunities for children in grades K-12.

Private lessons are available every day, with group classes held on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Mershon exhibit explores life in India

A photographic exhibition by Abhijit Varde, "A Rural Demeanor: Photographs from Maharashtra, India," will be on display through Oct. 25 in the Mershon Center. The exhibition is sponsored by the Center for Folklore Studies and the Mershon Center.

This exhibit of images of village work and leisure is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Varde, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Art Education, has exhibited his work in several venues in India and the United States.

GLBTIA History Month events set

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) groups at Ohio State are sponsoring a wide range of events in October to observe Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Ally (GLBTIA) History Month. This year's celebration marks the 30th anniversary of the existence of a GLBT student group at Ohio State.

Keith Boykin, one of the country's leading commentators on issues of race and sexual orientation, will give a talk titled "From Plantation to Abomination: Sex, Lies and Race in America" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 in room 160 209 W. 18th Ave.

For National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11, Ohio State's GLBT community will hold its traditional lunchtime rainbow flag raising at the Ohio Union, followed by a march and a rally at Bricker Hall. This year's theme is "There Is No Place Like Homecoming for Coming Out!" A free pizza party will follow the rally. Meet at the Ohio Union front entrance at 11:45 a.m.

  • Oct. 12, 8 p.m., Union Station Video Cafe, 630 N. High St. -- GLBT Alumni Society Pep Rally. Performances, a raffle and an auction (including football and basketball tickets). Proceeds benefit the Student Scholarship Fund of Ohio State's GLBT Alumni Society.

  • Oct. 17, 8 p.m., Ohio Union Gray Suite G -- Panel discussion on bisexuality.

  • Oct. 27, 9:30 p.m. to midnight, Hillel -- Come as You Were, Are, or Want to Be Dance. Bring $5 or canned goods to be donated to charity.

Mammography Day breakfast scheduled

The Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition is recognizing Ohio Mammography Day on Oct. 18 by honoring a New Lexington woman who has devoted her life to heightening public awareness about breast and cervical cancer.

Michele Hankinson, a nurse educator at Genesis Health Source in Zanesville, will receive the second annual Janet Voinovich Service Award for her work in the field of breast and cervical cancer education. The award will be given at a breakfast to be held from 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 18 at the Ohio Historical Center.

FTAD hosts Teachers'Round Tables

The Office of Faculty and TA Development is sponsoring Teachers'Round Tables from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 19 and Nov. 9 in 300 Younkin Success Center. Each event is a discussion forum for Ohio State faculty and TAs who are interested in improving teaching and enhancing learning.

The Oct. 19 session, "Writing Where You Least Expect It," features Steve Rissing, director of the Introductory Biology Program, and staff from the Center for the Study of Teaching and Writing.

The Nov. 9 session, "Taking the Guesswork Out of Multiple Choice," will explore issues and techniques of exam construction.

OHR offers financial planning workshop

The Office of Human Resources is continuing its financial planning series with an Oct. 24 Mid-Career Workshop, to be held at noon in Rhodes Hall Auditorium. The one-hour session is designed for employees with at least 10 years until retirement. Topics discussed will help participants set financial goals, devise strategies to meet those goals, and organize financial information.

Diversity Lecture features Takaki

The President and Provost's Diversity Lecture Series continues at 9 a.m. Oct. 22 in the Ohio Union, with a presentation by Ronald Takaki, professor of ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is recognized as the nation's foremost spokesperson for multicultural education and an author of numerous books on the subject.
