Notables

Honored book

The American Political Science Association has awarded a book by William E. Nelson Jr., professor of political science and African American and African studies, the YR2000 Best Book Award on comparative racial and ethnic politics. Nelson's book, Black Atlantic Politics: Dilemmas of Political Empowerment in Boston and Liverpool, was published by SUNY Press and focuses on black politics in both Boston and Liverpool. Nelson argues that black communities on both sides of the Atlantic face a host of social, economic and political constraints produced by hierarchical racial systems that promote white dominance and black subordination.

Statistical fellow

William I. Notz, professor of statistics and associate dean of the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association during the ASA Presidential Address at the Joint Statistical Meetings, held recently in Atlanta.

The designation of fellow is a superlative honor in the association and has for more than 75 years signified an individual's outstanding service to and leadership in the field of statistical science. Each year, the Committee on Fellows can elect only one-third of 1 percent of the total membership, which is currently nearly 18,000. This year, 48 members of the association were accorded the fellows honor.

The association cited Notz for innovative research in optimal design of experiments, for teaching and the development of undergraduate statistical education materials, and for editorial and professional service.

ASAE fellows

Two Ohio State engineering faculty members were among the nine people elected Fellows of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers at the organization's recent national meeting. Only 2 percent of ASAE active members achieve the grade of fellow.

Robert J. Gustafson, associate dean for the College of Engineering, was honored for his distinguished work in the areas of education, research and administration. An educator for more than 25 years, Gustafson has been active in the development of teaching materials concerning the finite element and electrical power.

K.C. Ting, chair of the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, was recognized for his many accomplishments as an educator and researcher. He has performed groundbreaking research in the applications of automation and systems analysis to bio-processing and bio-production.
