OSU hosts panel on post-attack distressOhio State and Harding Behavioral Healthcare and Medicine will host a panel of experts to share their observations and answer questions about depression, stress and terrorism-related anxiety during a program at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Fawcett Center. Panelists include physicians from OSU and Harding and the Department of Psychiatry. Medical specialists from other fields and representatives from local and state mental health and safety offices will be available to answer questions. Staff, Diversity award nominations soughtThe Office of Human Resources is seeking nominations for the 2001 Distinguished Staff Awards, and the University Senate Committee on Diversity and the Office of Human Resources are seeking nominations for the annual Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Awards. The staff awards will be presented to 12 Ohio State staff members for their exceptional accomplishments, leadership and service to the University. Award recipients will be honored at a June 26, 2002, luncheon. The nomination deadline is Jan. 18, 2002. All part-time and full-time staff with a minimum of five years of continuous service in a regular non-faculty position with no disciplinary action filed against them within the past 10 years are eligible for nomination. The diversity enhancement annual awards program is designed to recognize units or individuals that have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity at Ohio State and to exceeding expectations in implementing the Diversity Action Plan. The nomination deadline is Dec. 14. Eligible award recipients can be academic or academic support units (or teams within a unit), campus organizations, students, alumni, faculty or staff that have implemented policies, procedures and/or programs to enhance diversity. Thompson, professor of geological sciences and research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center, will discuss global warming during a lunchtime forum to be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Athletic Club of Columbus, 136 E. Broad St. Recently named one of America's best scientists by Time magazine and CNN, Thompson is an important figure in part because what he does is unique. While most glaciologists focus on polar regions, he has targeted the long-neglected ice fields of the tropics. Thompson and his research associates have conducted more than 40 expeditions to some of the most remote ice fields in the world, drilling through them to the bedrock, and bringing the ice cores back to Ohio State for analysis. Brooke to present Humanities lectureJohn Brooke, professor of history, will present "Consent, Civil Society, Public Sphere: Frameworks for Historical Synthesis in the Age of the American Revolution" in the College of Humanities' second Inaugural Lecture of the year at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Faculty Club. Based on a series of ongoing projects examining American public life in the Age of Revolution, Brooke's lecture will explore the proposition that the frameworks of consent and civil society already comprise a common meeting ground for debate, if not actual synthesis, a meeting ground formatively shaped by Jurgen Habermas' notion of the "public sphere," and manifested in the proliferating literature that his thesis has inspired. OSU physicians to discuss bioterrorismOhio State physicians will participate in a teleconference on bioterrorism from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 9 that will be transmitted to 1,500 sites across the country. The Agricultural Extension Service will also be broadcasting the teleconference live to its 88 sites in Ohio. Moderator is Jim Allen, associate professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Panelists include Richard Nelson, professor and vice chair of emergency medicine, and Julie Mangino, medical director of epidemiology and associate professor of clinical internal medicine. Featured speaker will be Sue Ott Rowlands, associate professor of theatre, who starred in the spring 2001 central Ohio premiere of the play Wit. Wit is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a 50-year-old English professor undergoing treatment for cancer. Rowlands will discuss the experience of playing this role and will read from the play. Human Ecology opens new costume exhibitA new exhibition at the College of Human Ecology, "Fashion American Style: 1900-1999," is now open to the public at no charge and runs through May 18, 2002. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibition, located in the Geraldine Schottenstein Wing of Campbell Hall, documents the move during the course of the 20th century from formal and constrictive American fashions to today's casual simplicity. Spielman photos to raise cancer fundsThe Paying Forward Foundation has teamed up with the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and Chris and Stefanie Spielman to issue a limited edition, autographed, 11-by-14-inch photograph of Chris Spielman from his playing days at Ohio State. Photos can be obtained by making a $350 donation to The Paying Forward Foundation, which will donate one-half of the proceeds to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research and the remainder to fund nursing scholarships at colleges and universities.
