OSU vs. UM Libraries: Competition and cooperation highlight special exhibits

Although the University of Michigan and Ohio State are famous for their athletic rivalries, these institutions often cooperate and complement each other in the academic arena.

As these two heated rivals prepare to meet on the football field Nov. 23 for their annual matchup, the libraries of each university have launched a Web exhibit featuring rare materials from the rival school.

The Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of Ohio State's Libraries has developed a Web exhibit (http://www.lib.ohio-state.edu/rarweb/ohio-mich/) that will feature a selection of rare materials in University Libraries that document the history of Michigan. In return, the University of Michigan's Rare Books Division will feature a Web exhibit of materials in its collections that document the history of Ohio. Both sites will link to each other.

Additionally, the Ohio State Archives, in conjunction with the Bentley Historical Library at Michigan, has developed a Web exhibit of the history of the rivalry and traditions between OSU and UM (http://www.lib.ohio-state.edu/arvweb/OSUvsMichigan/osuvsmichigan.htm). Highlights include a short history of the games, statistics about each program, comparisons between stadiums, coaches, players (such as Heisman trophy winners and All-Americans), and the bands.

Because the game is in Columbus this year, the Ohio State Archives also has created a physical version of the online exhibit that will appear in the Thompson (Main) Library and at the President's Club Brunch on game day. The exhibit will be located in the Sills Gallery on the first floor of the library in conjunction with the present exhibit on the history of Ohio Stadium.

For details, contact Tamar Chute at 292-3271 or chute.6@osu.edu, or Geoff Smith at 292-5938 or smith.1@osu.edu.
