Notables

Optometrist of the year

Robert D. Newcomb, professor of clinical optometry, VSP Chair for the Advancement of Professional Practice, and director of clinics, has been named the recipient of the 2002 Doctors Warren G. and Ruth P. Morris Optometrist of the Year Award in recognition for his outstanding achievements in optometry. His award was presented recently at a national conference in Cleveland.

Newcomb received his doctor of optometry degree from Ohio State in 1971. In 1997, he accepted a faculty appointment at the College of Optometry. He also is current president of the American Academy of Optometry, an international education and research organization that promotes the art, science and research of eye and vision care, and is a member of the prestigious National Academies of Practice. During the past 30 years, he has served on numerous local, state and national committees for the profession of optometry; and has authored over 60 publications, including two textbooks and seven textbook chapters.

DOE appointment

John Reeve, chair of the Department of Microbiology, was recently appointed the first chair of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Biosciences Council. The Department of Energy (DOE) recruited this council of senior research scientists from 12 U.S. research universities to identify research areas that would be appropriate for future sponsorship by the Energy Biosciences Research program of DOE. The council will organize workshops to focus such ideas, and Reeve said that the first will address how to manipulate plants to produce biochemicals on an industrial scale, nanotechniques to study biochemical pathways within a single living cell and how to determine the functions of previously-unknown genes identified by microbial genome sequencing.

In the past, the DOE Energy Biosciences Research program has funded research focused on carbon dioxide and energy capture through microbial and plant photosynthesis and the biological production of natural gas, methane. To date, the Department of Microbiology at Ohio State has received more than $8 million dollars in research grants from this program.
