4-H youth program raises holiday spirits of nursing home residents
By Randy Gammage, onCAMPUS staff
Faces of residents at Heartland
Victorian Village nursing home lit up like Christmas trees Dec. 2 as children
enrolled in Ohio State Extension's 4-H Youth Development programming descended
upon them with cards, cookies and carols.
The Rice Krispies treats and handmade cards were among the first projects
the dozen or so children from the Medary Elementary Boys & Girls Club
had embarked on since beginning the 4-H curriculum about eight weeks ago.
A room full of nursing home residents beamed with approval as the children
broke into a chorus of "Frosty the Snow Man."
Denise Dunn, activity director at Heartland, located at 920 Thurber
Drive West, said such intergenerational sharing brightens the lives of
the residents.
"They were in here an hour before the students arrived because they
were so excited,"she said.
Tony Hamilton, 51, a Heartland resident for the past six months, said
such visits are very beneficial this time of year. As he admired his gifts,
delivered by a fourth-grade visitor, he said "I loved it when she came
up and handed me these; it made me feel special."
A perky little fifth-grader among the group, Austin "Shorty"Mahoney,
said she was enjoying the interaction.
"It was really fun and it made me feel really good about myself
because they appreciate my company,"Mahoney said.

The 4-H programming is a continuation of a partnership formed about a
year ago between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus and OSU Extension,
which has proven to be quite successful, said Susan Colbert, an OSU Extension
agent assigned to work specifically in the University District to expand
Extension-based programs. She has been working in collaboration with the
P-12/Afterschool Initiative represented by several youth development organizations,
which strive to improve the quantity and quality of after-school programs
in that area. She also has been assisted by Theresa Ferrari, Extension
Specialist, Ohio 4-H Youth Development, who is the state contact for 4-H
Afterschool, a national initiative supported by funding from JC Penney
that provides learning opportunities to school-age youth in urban, suburban
and rural communities across America.
Recognizing that a young person's early experiences can greatly affect
his or her future development, 4-H Youth Development programs provide
youth an opportunity to obtain valuable life skills such as positive social
interaction, decision-making, mastering new skills and leadership, thereby
promoting self-esteem and a more positive view of their place in the future,
she said.
"It is our belief that children who have these skills will be less likely
to engage in drug use, gang activity, illicit sexual behavior, school
failure, delinquency and depression later in life,"Colbert said.
Members of 4-H have an opportunity to participate in hands-on learning,
recreation and community service activities as part of a community after-school
program. Colbert said these activities are organized and carried out by
agency staff, youth leaders or parents, who become 4-H volunteers with
OSU Extension, Franklin County. Volunteers are required to complete a
five-step process including an application, reference check, two-hour
orientation, personal interview and fingerprint background check.
She said the collaboration is a win-win situation that helps expand
available resources.
"The schools and clubs benefit because we (OSU Extension) are able to
add the educational component, and we benefit because they supply the
volunteers, staff and kids to work with so we don't have to go out and
start a 4-H club from scratch,"Colbert said.
For the past eight weeks, the children participating in 4-H youth development
through Medary Elementary Boys & Girls Club have been learning about the
importance of food and nutrition from Laura Loomis, OSU Extension's Franklin
County Expanded Food and Nutrition Educator, and Mia Leone, an Ohio State
Extension education intern and former 4-H member. Children have been learning
to cook a variety of meals, ranging from salad to spaghetti and, of course,
Rice Krispies treats.
"It's taught me to have good manners and how to cook,"said Ariel Self,
who joined 4-H at Medary two months ago.
In addition to Medary Elementary School, OSU Extension has been working
with Weinland Park's after-school program in collaboration with the Godman
Guild Association. Colbert said the potential of 4-H youth development
is tremendous.
"The ultimate goal is to expand to after-school programs in other
neighborhoods, and eventually throughout the city, state and nation,"Colbert
said.
