Diversity Lecture Series presents Harilyn Rousso

Harilyn Rousso, an educator, social worker, psychotherapist, disability rights activist and one of 10 2003 National Honorees for Women's History Month, will speak at 4 p.m. March 6 as part of the President and Provost's Diversity Lecture Series. The lecture will be in the William B. Saxbe Auditorium in the Moritz College of Law, 130 Drinko Hall.

Rousso will present "From Girl to Woman to Elder: An Introduction to Gender Issues for People with Disabilities Throughout the Life Cycle," an examination of the impact of gender on the socialization, sexuality, access to education, access to the workplace, parenting, and aging for women and girls with disabilities.

Harilyn Rousso

After earning a degree in economics from Brandeis University and working for the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington, D.C., Rousso discovered she had an interest in a career that would involve interpersonal relationships. She became an activist after being dropped from a psychotherapy training institute solely because of her disability. Rousso also was involved in the women's movement and became active in trying to get both movements to acknowledge and incorporate each other. In the early 1980s, she helped design the Networking Project for Disabled Women and Girls, and in 1988, she edited the book Disabled, Female, and Proud.

In conjunction with this lecture, the Disability Studies minor, the Women's Studies Program, the Office for Disability Services and the University ADA Coordinator's Office will be hosting a student workshop: "Double Jeopardy: Gender and Disability Bias at School and Work," from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. March 7, and a faculty workshop: "Gender, Disability and the Curriculum," from noon-3:30 p.m. March 7. Both workshops include lunch.

To register for either workshop, call the ADA Coordinator's Office at 292-6207, 688- 8605 (TTY), or e-mail ADA-OSU@osu.edu.
