Nussbaum to deliver Research Lecture

The Winter 2003 University Research Lecture presents Martha Craven Nussbaum, Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, University of Chicago Law School. Nussbaum will deliver "Gender, Development and the Capabilities Approach" at 5:30 p.m. March 13 in the Ohio Union West Ballroom.

A reception preceding the lecture will be held from 4-5 p.m. in the Ohio Union Main Lounge.

The event is presented by the Office of Research, OSU-Women in Development, the Mershon Citizenship Project, and the Moritz College of Law.

Nussbaum has published works in the fields of philosophy, law, education, women's studies, economics and politics, and has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, three grants/fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, two Bunting Institute fellowships, an ACLS Fellowship for Research, and the Grawemeyer Award in Education.

Fehervary presents Germanic lecture

Helen Fehervary, professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures, will present "History as Catastrophe and the Redemptive Power of Art: The Case of the German-Jewish Writer Anna Seghers" at 4:30 p.m. March 11 in the Faculty Club.

Her presentation will reflect on Seghers' contribution to modern letters in the context of Central European political and intellectual history.

Financial workshops to be held March 7, 20

The Office of Human Resources is continuing its free financial planning series with two March workshops.

"Social Security Benefits -- Coordinating with STRS/PERS at Retirement," will be held at noon March 7 in 300 Journalism Building.

"First-time Home Buying" will be held at noon March 20 in 518A James Cancer Hospital.

Marion diversity lecture is March 10

Toni King, associate professor of Black Women's Studies at Denison University, will present "Images of Black Women in America ... Past, Present and the Future" at noon March 10 in 200 Morrill Hall, Marion campus. Part of the Office of Retention and Campus Diversity's Student Advantage Series, the lecture also will be made available via teleconference connection with Ohio State's Delaware Center. 

King will explore the common images and stereotypes associated with black women historically, and some of the new images of black women that are currently evolving, and the implications of some of these more recent images for black women's lives, women's lives and American culture.

EMSI hosts Student Scientist program

The Environmental Molecular Science Institute (EMSI) at Ohio State is hosting an evening program at 5:30 p.m. March 13 in 2015 McPherson Laboratory to showcase Franklin Alternative Middle (FAMS) School Student Scientists' final presentations. The event will include dinner, project presentations followed by a question and answer session, and an awards presentation.

FAMS Student Scientists is an outreach program started by EMSI, an institute funded by the National Science Foundation, in collaboration with a seventh grade class at FAMS, a Columbus public school. This program allows students to analyze soil in their neighborhoods and perform individual experiments on the breakdown of a contaminant by soil microbes.

Geospatial conference focuses on technology

The Ohio Geospatial Technology Conference for Agriculture and Nature Resource Applications will be held March 24-26 at the Holiday Inn Worthington Convention Center, 175 Hutchinson Ave. Pre-register by March 10 for a conference discount.

The purpose of the conference is to pull together people in Ohio who have used geospatial technologies and have showed them to be successful in agricultural and natural resource applications.

Fred Limp, director for the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST) from the University of Arkansas, will deliver the keynote address. At an evening banquet, Kathryn Sullivan, COSI president and CEO and a former NASA astronaut, will share her experiences on mapping and exploring Earth both in the depths of the ocean and from space.

Career Services Award nominations sought

Nominations are due April 4 for the Ohio State Career Services Award, which recognizes University faculty and staff who support student career development and career services.

Nominees should meet the following criteria: hold a University position outside of Career Services; official job responsibilities do not include career advising and/or job assistance counseling; work with students individually or in groups to promote career development; and demonstrate leadership in supporting career development as a significant campus activity.

The Ohio State Career Services Committee sponsors the award. The award recipient will be presented with a $250 honorarium at the May 2003 University Career Services Committee Annual Speaker meeting.

Film, video showcase deadline March 28

The Wexner Center is now accepting entries for the eighth annual Ohio Short Film & Video Showcase. The Showcase, to be held in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater May 17, provides Ohio's independent media artists a chance to show their work in a theater for an audience.

Screened last year were 28 short works by film and video artists from Columbus, Athens, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Yellow Springs and more.

Entries must be independently produced, no longer than 20 minutes, and produced in Ohio within the last 18 months. Entries must be submitted on 11-inch videotape. Any format of film or video may be screened at the showcase.

Immigration paperwork workshops scheduled

The Office of International Education is offering a series of workshops for administrative staff and faculty who process immigration paperwork for employees who are foreign nationals. The workshops are free, but reservations are required and seating is limited. Workshops will be held in room 150 Younkin Success Center.

These workshops are designed for staff and faculty new to the immigration paperwork process, as well as those who have attended previous workshops.

The H-1B Temporary Worker workshop will be 8:30 a.m.-noon March 11; the J-1 exchange visitor workshop is 8:30-11:30 a.m. March 12; and the Permanent Residency workshop will be 8:30-11:30 a.m. March 18.

Classical pianist to perform at Marion

Ohio State Marion's 2002-03 Five Nights on Campus performing arts series is presenting classical pianist and former college professor Andrew Manfred Brown in Morrill Hall Auditorium, at 7:30 p.m. March 20.

Brown, an artist from Kentucky, will combine educational and entertaining dialogue with pieces by Mozart, Schubert and Brahms.

Attendees also are encouraged to visit the Wayne & Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery next to the auditorium in Morrill Hall.

Olentangy Wetlands short courses offered

The University's Olentangy River Wetland Research Park Summer Short Course Series will be offered again this year, starting with "Creation and Restoration of Wetlands," to be held April 15-17 in Naples, Fla.

The remaining courses will be taught at the new Wetland Research and Education Building at the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park.

A 10 percent discount is available if enrolled before March 14 for the April course, and if enrolled before May 30 for the remaining courses.

Additional courses are: July 9-11, "Creation and Restoration of Wetlands"; Aug. 18-22, "Wetland Delineation"; Sept. 29-Oct. 1, "Ecological Modelling"; and Oct. 6-8, "Ecological Engineering and Ecosystem Restoration."

Multicultural Center seeks nominations

The Multicultural Center is seeking nominations for its award program, designed to acknowledge significant accomplishment, initiative, innovation, work, or service in areas intersecting with the Multicultural Center mission. The 10 award categories encourage recognition of important multicultural work both within the University and in the central Ohio community, and strengthen partnerships and build bridges with individuals and organizations working in cooperation with Multicultural Center values and goals.

The 2nd Annual Multicultural Center Awards will be presented from 4:30-6:30 p.m. April 28 at the Faculty Club. The reception and program are open to the public.
