Stone Laboratory is Ohio State's Lake Erie lab and the oldest freshwater biological field station in the country.

Stone Lab offers summer courses, meeting space

Stone Laboratory, located on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie's Put-in-Bay harbor, will open its doors this summer to groups that want to take advantage of its unique location for meetings, retreats or small conferences.

The laboratory can accommodate approximately 50 people during the summer. It has a conference room, AV equipment, and meals and refreshments are available. Limited housing is available for 15 people; additional lodging can be found in the town of Put-in-Bay.

One-day workshops

  • One-day workshops are being offered that include hands-on activities such as a science cruise in Lake Erie, laboratory sessions, bird walks, edible plant walks, and seining. Other activities can be included based on the needs of the group. The workshops can accommodate up to 30 people, from middle school to adult groups. Meals and refreshments are included. For details or scheduling, contact Laboratory Manager John Hageman at 247-6500 or hageman.2@osu.edu.

Summer courses

  • Faculty and staff members can use the employee tuition waiver benefit to take a credit course at Stone Laboratory for free. (Payment for room and board and class fees, if applicable, is not included in the tuition waiver.) Most classes are 3 credit hours and can be transferred to other colleges. Courses being offered include: "Introduction to the Study of Birds," from June 15-21, which provides an introduction to the study of birds including field techniques and identification; "Introduction to Local Flora," from July 13-19, which teaches how to identify terrestrial and wetland plants; and "Geologic Setting of Lake Erie," from July 19-25, which examines geologic features along the southern shore of Lake Erie and interprets the geologic history of Ohio in the Lake Erie basin. Introductory courses also are open to select high school students. For course information, a complete summer schedule and applications, contact 292-8949 or pineda.2@osu.edu, or visit the Web at www.sg.ohio-state.edu.

Committee seeks Marion campus dean

The search committee for the dean/director at Ohio State Marion is inviting applications and nominations for the position, which becomes available July 1. Qualifications include a distinguished record in research and teaching plus demonstrated leadership and administrative ability and strong commitment to diversity and community. Candidates must qualify for a tenured appointment in one of the university's academic departments, and candidates who qualify for full professor are preferred.

To assure full consideration, applications and nominations should be received by June 2, when the search committee begins screening dossiers; however, the committee will continue to receive applications until the position is filled. Karen A. Bell, dean of the College of the Arts, is chairing the committee.

Web site lists summer programs for youth

A new Web-based resource that lists all Ohio State-affiliated programming for youth in central Ohio can assist parents who are looking for programs to keep their school-age children busy and actively learning this summer.

The university's P-12 Project has created a "Buckeye Programs for Youth" Web site, an extensive new university-community database that searches for youth programs, camps and other activities that might interest pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students.

The program was created in response to demand from parents in the community seeking information about summer programs. The database lists 117 youth programs and 39 summer-only programs.

Users can search for programs based on subject area, grades or both. Both the larger database and the link to Buckeye Programs for Youth can be found at the Web site at www.osu.edu/p12.

Johnson to deliver Humanities lecture

Nan Johnson, professor of English, will present "Persuade Me to Remember" at 4:30 p.m. May 27 in the Faculty Club. Johnson will identify theoretical shifts in the rhetorical canon of memory since the Enlightenment and explore the long range influence of these shifts on contemporary rhetorical practices that assume that audiences can be counted on to remember both the fact and the significance of cultural events in predetermined ways.

To R.S.V.P., call the College of Humanities at 292-1882.

Campus Campaign gifts support many areas

The annual Campus Campaign -- a combined effort of faculty, staff and students demonstrating their "belief in Ohio State" -- is now in full swing to help provide ongoing support to the university. Philanthropic gifts to the university provide its margin of excellence, and gifts from faculty, staff and students are an endorsement of the university, announcing that this is an institution worthy of support and that the people closest to it are doing their part.

Gifts may be designated to any fund, but among those funded solely through the Campus Campaign is the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund, which supports African-American undergraduate students with financial need.

Although the Campus Campaign is a year-round effort, the major solicitation phase occurs during the spring. Gifts can be made at any time by contacting the campaign office at 292-3065 or ccampaign@osu.edu to request a gift card, or online at www.giveto.osu.edu by indicating a Campus Campaign gift in the "special instructions" section of the online giving form.

Geiger to moderate lunch program

Athletic Director Andy Geiger will moderate a panel of students who will discuss "Life as a Scholar-Athlete at Ohio State" during a Lunch & Learn program on May 27 at the Faculty Club. The student-athletes will discuss how they view themselves as students and representatives of their sports, and how they balance practice, classes and public attention.

The event is open to the university community. A buffet lunch is at 11:30 a.m. with the panel discussion beginning at noon.

For reservations, call 292-2262.

Free financial workshop is June 5

The Office of Human Resources is continuing its free financial planning series with a June 5 workshop, "Marriage and Money Management," to be held at noon in 713 Dreese Labs.

To register, contact 247-7961 or admin@hr.osu.edu, or visit the Web at http://hr.osu.edu/finseries.htm.

Advisers sought for student organizations

Looking to be more involved in the campus community? To register with the university, student organizations must have a full-time faculty or staff member to serve as an adviser, and many new and existing student groups are in need of an adviser.

The time and commitment level for advising can be as much or as little as the adviser chooses, based also on the needs of the organization.

For details, visit the Web at www.ohiounion.com/studentorgs/adviserweb/.

Students to present 'Kiss Me Kate'

Off the Lake, a non-profit organization created to provide opportunities for Ohio State students to explore theatrical talents, is presenting the musical "Kiss Me Kate" at 8 p.m. May 29-31 in 131 Hitchcock Hall. Based around Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," "Kiss Me Kate" features a 25-member cast and a 15-piece orchestra.

Admission is a donation of a canned food item. Last year Off the Lake contributed more than 1,000 food items to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

For details, contact Joan Bryant at 688-2978 or bryant.202@osu.edu.

ViewPoint Bistro to close for summer

The Hospitality Management Program of the College of Human Ecology and the Office of Student Affairs extend thanks to the Ohio State community for continuing to make the ViewPoint Bistro a huge success. Since it is a student laboratory, the ViewPoint will be closed for summer break. ViewPoint will be open through June 6, and will reopen the second week of classes autumn quarter. Normal business hours are 11 a.m.2 p.m. MondayFriday for lunch, and 4:30-7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday for dinner.
