Women's Council seeks nominationsThe President's Council on Women's Issues is seeking nominations for members for the 2003-04 academic year. The council, composed of 22 faculty, staff and student members, is a mechanism for assisting the Office of the President with identifying and addressing policies and practices critical to the success of women at the university. Individuals may self-nominate or be nominated by others. President Karen Holbrook will select 10 new members to fill vacancies left by term expirations. The deadline is Aug. 1. Information sought on arson fireThe University Area Crime Stoppers, Central Ohio Crime Stoppers and Ohio State have received pledges totaling more than $34,000 in a reward fund for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the fatal April 13 arson fire on 17th Avenue. The blaze killed two Ohio State students and three Ohio University students. The Office of Off-Campus Student Services distributed updated flyers recently in the area as authorities work to reach as many students as possible before they leave the area for summer break or upon graduation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 645-TIPS (8477) or toll-free at (877) 645-8477. Callers who wish to remain anonymous will be issued a confidential code number to be eligible for a cash reward. CIO launches online newsletterThe Office of the Chief Information Officer is unveiling a new online newsletter, IT (Information Technology) Community. The newsletter covers news and events from the offices of the CIO, including the Office of Information Technology/UNITS, Student Information Systems, Technology Enhanced Learning and Research, as well as Ohio State. The editors welcome comments and technology articles and leads. IT Community is updated regularly and can be accessed at http://cio.osu.edu/communications/community. onCampus accepting listings for 2003-04 GuideonCampus is now accepting submissions for the 2003-04 Guide, available Sept. 18. The Guide is a special edition of onCampus that provides space for departments to communicate news and services they would like faculty and staff to remember throughout the year. The Guide includes listings organized into several categories, including training and development, dining and shopping, health and wellness, travel and accommodations, arts and entertainment, financial services, university organizations and university services. Units may submit information to be listed at no charge. Units who were not listed last year who wish to be added should e-mail a contact name and phone number to oncampusguide@osu.edu by July 1 or call Susan Wittstock at 292-8419. In addition, units may purchase advertising space. Contact Bill Estep, advertising manager, at 292-8421 for more information. Advertising space deadline is Aug. 20. Library announces book-plate programUniversity Libraries, in coordination with the Office of Academic Affairs, will begin a program this year to honor newly tenured or promoted faculty by book-plating an item in the Libraries' collection in their names. Faculty will be asked to select an important book or bound journal already in the collection or one that should be added to the collection, and the selected item will be book-plated with the faculty member's name and a short statement about why this particular title is important. The Libraries will contact faculty promoted or granted tenure in 2003 in the coming months to begin this new program. A reception will be held in the fall to celebrate newly tenured and promoted faculty and to display the selected books with their new plates. Herdendorf, professor of geological sciences, will present "Discovery and Exploration of Shipwrecks: Case Studies of the Steamers Central America and Adventure" on June 19 to kick off the Stone Laboratory Guest Lectures Series summer schedule. Jane Forsythe, Bowling Green State University, will present "The Geologic Setting of Lake Erie" on June 26. The free lectures are held Thursday evenings from 7:45-9 p.m. June 19 through Aug. 14 on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie. Smoking cessation classes scheduledSummer sessions of the Kick It! tobacco cessation program, offered by The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, begin June 25. Classes will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on June 25, July 2, 9, 16 and 23 at the Center for Wellness and Prevention located at OSU Outpatient Services (formerly J.L. Camera Center), 2050 Kenny Road, Suite 1010. A registered nurse specially trained in smoking cessation facilitates the five-week program promoting tobacco cessation, intervention and support opportunities for people who smoke or use smokeless tobacco.
