More than 200 pairs of eyeglasses once worn by celebrities are on display at the College of Optometry.

Optometry houses celebrity eyewear exhibit

Down the hall from a dispensary brimming with designer eyewear resides a collection of specs once worn by household names. The College of Optometry in Fry Hall boasts an assortment of more than 200 frames from just as many well-known people. Mary Kay donated pair of pink, heart-shaped glasses. Jim Davis, creator of the Garfield comic strip, sent oversized amber-colored sunglasses. The company that manufactured 18-karat gold frames for Elvis sent a gilded 1970s-era replica of the German-made frames. Other famous donators include Larry King, Stephen King, Charles Schulz and Sophia Loren.

The optometry clinic asks for frame donations via a letter. "If someone lets us know that they saw a celebrity wearing glasses, we send that person a letter," said Karen Greene, director of optometry relations.

Some celebrities send notes with their frames. Jim Davis apologized for not sending his reading glasses -- "I only own one pair!" he wrote -- and instead sent his sunglasses. Children's book illustrator Lane Smith sent some original artwork along with a pair of frames he wore in the fifth grade.

The collection was the brainchild of Arol Augsburger, once a professor of optometry at Ohio State. He moved on to the University of Alabama, but the collection stayed here. The exhibit is open to the public during regular business hours.

Move-In Day to affect traffic, parking

University personnel working on move-in day are asked to plan for early arrival to campus to avoid peak traffic flow and to allow for inevitable delay in any movement about campus throughout the day.

Temporary traffic and parking modifications enforced by Transportation and Parking Services will include tow-away zones, street closures and parking relocations, which include the North, Olentangy and South residence halls.
