Seal is new onCampus editor

Joni Bentz Seal is the new editor of onCampus, joining both the newspaper's staff and Ohio State in September. She brings nearly 15 years of professional experience to Ohio State, including seven years with Franklin University directing its internal and external communication, publication and marketing efforts. She also spent seven years as a technical writer and publication designer and editor with Frigidaire Appliance Company.

Seal earned her B.A. in English from Ohio University and her MBA from Franklin University. An animal lover, she volunteers with the Citizens for Humane Action Animal Shelter in Westerville, producing its quarterly newsletter The Tail Waggin' Times. She also has served the shelter as board member and past president of the board of trustees.

In addition to her responsibilities as editor, Seal will oversee coverage of, among others, the Board of Trustees, Academic Affairs, the Diversity Action Plan and The Women's Place, as well as serve as a contributing writer and designer of the publication. National outreach conference is Oct. 6-8

Catalyst for Change: Outreach Scholarship 2002 will be Oct. 6-8 at the Holiday Inn at Worthington. The second annual national conference is sponsored by Ohio State, Penn State University and the University of Wisconsin-Extension.

The conference kicks off with an opening plenary session from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 6,"Making Change Matter for the Community and the University."Community members, university leaders, and students will discuss the difference outreach makes. Speakede William E. Kirwan, former OSU president, and Bobby D. Moser, vice president for University outreach.

A full slate of community and information sessions with guest speakers from all walks of outreach will conclude at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 8.

OSU-WID present lecture, reception

OSU-Women in Development and International Programs in Agriculture will present"Globalization and the Employment of Poor Rural Women: Lessons Learned From the Gender and Agribusiness Project,"from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at 120 Mershon Center. A reception will follow.

The guest speaker is Kathleen Cloud, director of the gender and agribusiness program and associate professor emeritus at the University of Illinois. The Gender and Agribusiness Project is an interdisciplinary effort to draw a clear and detailed picture of the best practices of a small number of multinational agribusiness companies operating in rural areas, providing a realistic benchmark of what is possible.

The Mershon Center and the Office of International Affairs will co-sponsor the lecture.

Fontana Lab facility hosts open house

The Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility of Campus Chemical Instrument Center is showcasing their newly renovated laboratory and office space with an open house from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 4. Located at 243 Fontana Lab, 116 W. 19th Ave., the facility provides analytical support and instructional expertise in mass spectrometric techniques and instrumentation for all academic departments at Ohio State, researchers at other universities, and customers from private industry. The open house will include a dedication ceremony, technology demonstrations and a tour of the facility.

Ergonomics offers short course

The Institute for Ergonomics is offering its autumn ergonomics short course,"Putting Ergonomics Into Practice,"in Pfahl Hall, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 15 and concluding at noon Oct. 18.

Course topics include physical work and injury risk, computer workstation design, and effects of work organization and the social environment on employee health. Participants will earn continuing education credits.

Women's Club lunch group to discuss fashion

Elizabeth Enke and Anne Kennedy will deliver"Fall Into Fashion With Talbots,"at the University Women's Club Oct. 7 lunch meeting at the Faculty Club. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.; the program is at 12:30 p.m. Enke and Kennedy are the manager and assistant manager, respectively, of Talbots in the Worthington Mall.

Fiesta to celebrate Hispanic Services

A Welcome Week Fiesta will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Ohio Union to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Office of Hispanic Student Services. The celebration will showcase of Caribbean and Latin American music and food.

The event is sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs, the Center for Latin American Studies, Undergraduate Student Government, the Multicultural Center, the Hispanic Oversight Committee, the Ohio Union & Student Activities, and the Welcome Week Steering Committee.

New women's group now forming

Women Student Services is assembling a monthly meeting of female staff members interested in discussing pressing issues that affect women. Those attending will have the opportunity to network with other departments and staff members; create mentor/mentee relationships with other women on staff; and facilitate feelings of community among women working at the University.

Beitman to deliver Ian Gregory lecture

Bernard D. Beitman, professor of psychiatry and medicine and chairman of psychiatry and neurology at the University of Missouri, will deliver the Ian Gregory Lecture on Psychiatric Education at noon Oct. 9 in room 165 of the Dorothy Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. Beitman will discuss"The Use of the Future in Psychotherapy."

An informal meeting with Beitman will take place before his lecture at 11 a.m. in Suite 130 Neuroscience Facility. Beitman is the author of Learning Psychotherapy: A Time-efficient, Research-based, and Outcome-measured Psychotherapy Training Program.

Caregiver support group now forming

Referrals are now being accepted for the eight-week autumn session of"For the Caregivers,"an emotional support group designed to provide a safe and caring environment for family members, partners and friends of loved ones with cancer. The group will meet weekly from 6-7:30 p.m. from Sept. 24-Nov. 12. Meetings are held at the Griswold-Worthington Senior Center, 777 High St. There is no fee to participate, but registration is required.

Airport festival volunteers needed

Volunteers are being sought for a Fly Into Fall Family Fun Festival to be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Ohio State Airport.

Proceeds from the festival will benefit the Columbus Speech and Hearing Center.

Antibiotics focus of annual Evans Lecture

Christopher T. Walsh, professor at the Harvard Medical School, will present"Antibiotics: Past, Present and Future"during the annual Evans Lecture, to be held at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4 in 1000 McPherson Lab. Walsh will review major classes of natural and synthetic antibacterial agents along with their major targets in bacteria. A reception will follow.
