Prior Library hosts "Frankenstein"

By Jo McCulty

"Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature" will be on display in the Prior Health Sciences Library through Oct. 31.

One of the most enduring myths of the Western world -- Mary Shelley's Frankenstein -- is the focus of a traveling exhibition, "Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature," that will be on display in the Prior Health Sciences Library's Medical Heritage Center, Sept. 25 through Oct. 31. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.

The tragic story of Victor Frankenstein and the living monster he creates in his laboratory has gripped imaginations since it was first published in 1818. Shelley was only 18 years old when she began writing Frankenstein. The daughter of social reformists, she believed that knowledge was a defense against the abuse of power by governments and individuals; armed with knowledge, humans could make responsible choices.

Prior is one of only 80 libraries in the country selected to host the exhibit. During its run, the library will sponsor programming that explores major themes of the novel:

  • "Columbus Reads Frankenstein: A Community Book Discussion," 7 p.m. Sept. 30, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Lennox Town Center, 1739 Olentangy River Road, co-sponsored by the Columbus Metropolitan Library
  • "How Much is Too Much?İScience, Ethics, and Frankenstein," panel discussion, 4:30 p.m. Oct. 8, Davis Heart and Lung Institute
  • "Shelley's Anonymous Monster: The Power of Names in an Ordered Universe," panel discussion, 7 p.m. Oct. 13, Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Lennox Town Center
  • "The Changing Face of Frankenstein in Film," lecture, 7 p.m. Oct. 29, Columbus Metropolitan Library, 96 S. Grant Ave.
  • "The Golem," silent film and discussion, 4 p.m. Oct. 30, Wexner Center for the Arts, co-sponsored by the Melton Center for Jewish Studies

"Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature" was developed by the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Md., in collaboration with the American Library Association. The traveling exhibition has been made possible through major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Library of Medicine, and is based on a major exhibition produced by the National Library of Medicine in 1997-98.

Locally, the program is presented with support from Barnes & Noble Booksellers, the Columbus Metropolitan Library and the Ohio Humanities Council.

For updates on programming, visit the Prior Health Sciences Library Web site, http://library.med.ohio-state.edu/.
