The Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities, $4,000 Ohio Humanities Council grant to fund the Institute-Museum Faculty Series, "The Big Picture: Humanities Lectures at the Columbus Museum of Art" for 2003-04.

Joe Donnermeyer, Human and Community Resource Development, $104,500 Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services grant to conduct a statewide survey of citizens' attitudes toward crime and criminal justice; and a $24,037 CURA (Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, Department of Geography) grant for developing a demographic database of the Amish, co-recipient is Elizabeth Cooksey, Sociology.

Darcie Slanker and Diana Jackson, Center on Education and Training for Employment, $99,995 Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services grant for "The Community Youth Mapping Project," June 2003.

Benjamin Stinner, Patrick Goebel and Richard Moore, Human and Community Resource Development, Deborah Stinner and Robin Taylor, Entomology, $99,990 National Science Foundation grant for "Restoring Biocomplexity into Agroecosystems as the Basis of Sustainability: A Planning Grant to Link Ecological and Human Networks in a Headwater Watershed."

Presentations

Gregory Armstrong, Plant Biology, presented "Light Regulation of Pigment Biosynthesis, Membrane Formation and Plastid Differentiation in Arabidopsis" at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, April 25.

Jim Connors, Human and Community Resource Development, presented a paper titled "International Knowledge and Attitudes of FFA Costa Rican Travel Seminar Participants" at the Association for International Agricultural and Extension Education annual conference in Raleigh, N.C., April 8-12.

Lora Friedrich, Rural Sociology, and Joe Donnermeyer, Human and Community Resource Development, presented "To Be or Not To Be: An Analysis of the Baptism Decisions of Young Amish Men and Women" at the biannual meeting of the Anabaptist Sociology and Anthropology Association, Hillsdale College, Mich., June 27.

Somnath Ghosh, Mechanical Engineering, was the keynote speaker at the annual Computational Science and Engineering Research Symposium at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, April 25.

Recognitions

Robert Agunga, Human and Community Resource Development, was accepted into the 2003-04 Ohio State Teaching Enhancement Programs (OSTEP), Mid-Career and Senior Faculty Program.

Joe Donnermeyer, Human and Community Resource Development, received the Outstanding Service to Students Award.

Lakshmi Dutta, Electrical Engineering, won the Academic Advising Association award for "Outstanding Advisor."

Bill Flinn, Human and Community Resource Development, was recognized as one of ten professors nominated by the students of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences for outstanding undergraduate teaching awards, at the 2003 Human and Community Resource Development Department Honors Reception, April 23.

Tim Mazik, Internal Medicine, was the College of Medicine and Public Health/Office of Health Sciences Employee of the Month for July 2003.

Susan Noble, Electrical Engineering, was recognized by the Ohio State Academic Advising Association for her contribution to advising.

Srinivasan Parthasarathy, Computer and Information Science, and Michael Twa, Tom Raasch and M. Bullimore, OSU Vision Sciences, won the Best Paper Award for "Automated Classification of Keratoconus: A Case Study in Analyzing Clinical Data"at the SIAM International Conference on Data Mining, San Francisco, May 1-3.

Prasanna Raghavan, Mechanical Engineering, a Ph.D. candidate working in the field of computational mechanics, was awarded first prize in the 15th annual Melosh Medal Competition for the Best Student Paper on finite element analysis, Duke University, Durham, N.C.,March 28.

Cathy Rakowski, Human and Community Resource Development, received the 2003 Rodney F. Plimpton Young Teacher Award.

Jeffrey Reutter, David Kelch, Jill Jentes Banicki and Frank Lichtkoppler, Ohio Sea Grant, recently won an APEX Award of Excellence, for "Entering the Zone," an article about the Lake Erie "dead zone" that appeared in the September/October 2002 issue of Twine Line, Ohio Sea Grant's newsletter.

Eric Schnell, Information Technology Services, Fred Snyder, Ohio Sea Grant College Program, and Ohio Sea Grant Extension shared the 2003 Great Lakes Sea Grant Program Leaders' Outstanding Program Award at the Network Conference, Burlington, Vt., June 8-11.

Peg Steele, Computer and Information Science, received the Outstanding Advising Award from the National Academic Advising Association, in the category of Academic Advising -- Primary Role.

Linda Weavers, Civil and Environmental Engineering, received the American Association of University Women's "Recognition Award for Emerging Scholars."

John Wenzel, Entomology, and John Freudenstein, Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology, appeared in the Ohio Bicentenary Commission's documentary "Ohio 200 Years," which was first publicly broadcast May 8.

Sherrie Whaley, Mark Tucker and Jeff Sharp, Human and Community Resource Development, and Lynn Knipe, Food Science and Technology, received the 2003 ACE Best Research Paper Award for "Preferred Communication Sources and Food-Related Risks: A Statewide Analysis," Kansas City, Mo., June 2003.

Susie Whittington, Human and Community Resource Development, received the Outstanding Service to Students Award.

Karla Zadnik, Optometry, received the First Annual James M. Siddens Award for Distinguished Faculty Advising for exceptional advising of graduate students at Ohio State from the Council of Graduate Students.

Service

Scott Scheer, Human and Community Resource Development, led a statewide in-service for Extension professionals on Pre-adolescent Development and Extension Programming for Children, April 22.

Allison Snow, Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology, is the president-elect for the Botanical Society of America, a national professional society for plant biologists. Snow will serve as president-elect, July 2003-June 2004; president,ÝJuly 2004-June 2005; and past-president, July 2005-June 2006.
