Veterans Day activities set for universityIn recognition of Veterans Day Nov. 11, Ohio State is hosting activities to honor university co-workers who are military veterans, and all veterans who have served and are currently serving in the military.
Nominations sought by Academic AffairsThe Office of Academic Affairs is seeking nominations for three high-profile awards: the Distinguished University Professor, the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service, and the University Distinguished Lecture Series. Marks to deliver Evans Award Lecture Nov. 7Tobin Marks, the Vladimir N. Ipatieff Professor of Catalytic Chemistry and professor of materials science and engineering in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University, is the featured speaker this year in the Department of Chemistry's annual Evans Award Lecture Nov. 7. The public lecture, "Nanophotonics: Materials and Devices that Process Light," will explore the interdisciplinary work in materials chemistry that is helping researchers build unique molecules into tiny electronic devices. The talk will begin at 3:30 p.m. in 1000 McPherson Laboratory. Small Society exhibit opens Nov. 2The Ohio State Cartoon Research Library will mount a major exhibition of the original daily and Sunday publication, The Small Society, Nov. 2-Feb. 27, 2004. Approximately 50 comic strips, selected from the Morrie Brickman Collection, will be displayed in the Reading Room Gallery. To celebrate the opening of the exhibit, there will be a reading of Brickman's unpublished play, Coming of Age, and a lecture by Jules Feiffer, "The Cartoonist as Playwright," at 2 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. Faculty being honored were asked to select a library book to be plated in recognition of their accomplishments, including a statement of why the book is significant to them. Multicultural Center offers program fundingThe Multicultural Center is seeking faculty who would like to connect to the center by developing programming in support of the center's 2003-04 theme "Community, Identity and the Quest for the ëGood Life.'" Two of Banks' works, Affliction and The Sweet Hereafter were made into feature films, while his latest collection of stories, The Angel on the Roof, has garnered critical acclaim.
