onCampus is seeking best holiday recipes

onCampus is inviting all faculty and staff to join us in stirring up a little holiday cheer by submitting your favorite recipes for our third annual Holiday Recipes feature. We're looking for cherished family traditions, potluck favorites and even simple snacks. Depending on space, we'll publish our favorite submissions in a special feature in our Dec. 11 issue.

Kalbouss is veterans lunch speaker

George Kalbouss, professor emeritus of humanities, will deliver "Ohio's Immigration Heritage: An Ohio Bicentennial Program" from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 12 in the Faculty Club rooms A-D. Veterans lunches are open to all Ohio State faculty, staff and student veterans.

Liu to deliver diversity lecture

Eric Liu, founder of the How We Teach Intive, a global project to develop methods of effective, powerful teaching, will deliver "How Asian Americans Will Change Racial Politics" at 4 p.m. Nov. 25 in the Ohio Union. The free presentation is part of the President and Provost's Diversity Lecture Series.

Nominations sought for diversity awards

The University Senate Committee on Diversity, in cooperation with the Office of Human Resources, is accepting nominations for the 2004 Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Awards through Dec. 12. This annual awards program is designed to recognize units or individuals that have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity at Ohio State and to exceeding expectations in implementing the Diversity Action Plan.

Up to five award winners will be honored at a May 4, 2004 ceremony and will receive a plaque and a $1,200 cash award.

Distinguished Staff nominations sought

The Office of Human Resources is accepting nominations for the 2004 Distinguished Staff Awards through Jan. 9, 2004.

All part-time and full-time staff with a minimum of five years of continuous service at Ohio State are eligible. Staff members should be nominated based on exceptional accomplishments, leadership and service to the university.

Twelve award recipients will receive a crystal trophy, a $1,500 cash award, and an increase of $700 to his or her base salary.

Newark campus to present holiday concert

The University Chorus and The Heisey Brass will present a holiday concert at 8 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Reese Center Auditorium on the Ohio State Newark and Central Ohio Technical College campus. The concert will feature the works of contemporary English composer John Rutter, including folksong arrangement the Te Deum and O Holy Night, a setting of 13 familiar carols and hymns.

The event is free, but donations will be collected for the Give a Gift to a Child Program. A reception will follow the performance.

Teaching awards deadline is Jan. 9

The Office of Academic Affairs is accepting nominations for the University Departmental Teaching Excellence Awards, to be presented to two departments that demonstrate outstanding achievement in teaching and learning. The nomination deadline is Jan. 9, 2004. The awards emphasize the university's recognition of the central role that undergraduate, graduate and professional teaching plays in its mission.

Each award is $50,000 cash to be used for advancing teaching in the respective departments, and at least one of the awards will be made to a department teaching predominantly undergraduates.

Academic departments should submit applications to their college deans, and nomination portfolios should then be forwarded to: University Departmental Teaching Excellence Award Committee, Office of Academic Affairs, 203 Bricker Hall.

Videoconferencing workshop for faculty

"Teaching with Interactive Video" will be the topic of an upcoming faculty workshop at noon Nov. 25, sponsored by OSU CARES/OSU Extension and the Office of Continuing Education. The workshop can be attended on the Columbus campus in 244 Kottman Hall or at the OSU Learning Centers in Caldwell and Piketon.

Pi Alpha Xi poinsettia sale is Dec. 4-6

Pi Alpha Xi, the OSU horticulture and floriculture honor society, will hold its 26th annual Poinsettia Sale Dec. 4-6 at the OSU Howlett Hall Greenhouses from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Dec. 4-5 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 6. A variety of poinsettias and live holiday decorations will be available. For additional information, call 688-3479.

Honey Bee Lab conducting annual sale

The OSU Honey Bee Lab on the Wooster campus is conducting its Annual Holiday Honey Sale at various locations, concluding with the Hidden Benefits Fair in French Field House from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 17. An assortment of items will be sold from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on the following dates and at the following locations: Nov. 20 and Dec. 4, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences; Nov. 21, Drinko Hall; Dec. 2, Jennings Hall; Dec. 3, Baker Systems; and Dec. 5, Arps Hall.

The sale also is taking place at two locations at the Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster. In Skou Hall, sale hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, through Dec. 31. In the Honey Bee Lab, sale hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Nov. 25, Dec. 9-11 and 15.

Art Museum lecture part of Big Picture series

The OSU Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities and the Columbus Museum of Art will present "Blacks and Blues" at 2 p.m. Nov. 23 in the museum auditorium, in conjunction with the museum's current exhibition "Not-So-Basic-BLACK," by Pheoris West of the College of Art. A reception will follow.

The Big Picture is a series of talks and panel discussions by Ohio State and other faculty about museum exhibitions during 2003-04.

Bistro announces holiday hours

The ViewPoint Bistro, a restaurant operated by Hospitality Management students, is open through Dec. 5 and will reopen on Jan. 12, 2004 for winter quarter. The restaurant, located in the Drake Performance and Event Center, serves lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday and dinner from 4:30-7 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday.

Library marks American Diabetes Month

In recognition of November as American Diabetes Month, free pamphlets and brochures about diabetes and its risks are available throughout November outside the Library for Health Information, located in the fifth floor atrium between Doan and Rhodes halls in the Medical Center. A selection of books and videotapes about diabetes also are available for checkout.

Information also is available on various illnesses, medical conditions and healthy lifestyles.

Women's Club lunch features The Statesmen

The University Women's Club is hosting The Statesmen, an auditioned ensemble that performs independently and in combination with the Men's Glee Club, on Dec. 1 at the Faculty Club. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.; the program is at 12:30 p.m.

Creative Writing hosts Quinn Dalton reading

The OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series is presenting Quinn Dalton for a free public reading at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 in 311 Denney Hall.

Dalton's first novel, High Strung, was released by Simon and Schuster's Atria Books in July 2003, with a collection of short stories, Bulletproof Girl, to follow in 2004. She is the winner of the Pearl 2002 Fiction Prize for her short story, "Back on Earth" and a recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council 2002-03 artist fellowship.

Beat Michigan art displayed in Ohio Union

The Ohio Union has teamed with local elementary schools to create the art exhibit "Buckeye Gallery for Kids: Statues of Brutus Buckeye," on display in the student union through Nov. 22 as part of the university's Beat Michigan Week festivities.

The exhibit is part of the outreach and engagement initiatives endorsed by the university in an effort to provide a meaningful collaboration between the university and its neighbors.

Students in the latchkey programs at Fifth Avenue Alternative, Indianola Alternative and Weinland Park elementary schools created the artwork being showcased.
