Bebe Miller Company performs Nov. 24 and 25
Bebe Miller, acclaimed choreographer and professor in the Department
of Dance, will bring her New York dance troupe to campus this month for
a residency and performances. The Bebe Miller Company will present in-progress
performances of their newest work, The Landing/Place Project, with live
music at 8 p.m. Nov. 24 and 25 in Sullivant Hall Theatre.
Her company was on campus a year ago to work with students and explore
new technology -- specifically how dancers' movements can be "captured"
via a process called motion capture and how a new work can integrally
incorporate the digital creative process. The group has partnered with
the new Motion Capture Lab at OSU's Advanced Computing Center for the
Arts and Design to develop the project. Motion capture uses state-of-the-art
digital equipment to capture every subtle movement of a subject, preserving
the movements on a computer.
Miller's company is back this month to pick up development of The Landing/Place
Project. The work in progress combines live movement from the company's
five dancers with motion capture images and video imagery taken during
a trip to Eritrea, North Africa.
"Landing/Place concerns the impact of the unfamiliar against the everyday
-- imagine any collision of images that tells you that you're not at home,"
Miller said. "The work explores sensory, spatial and cultural dislocation
... the yearning toward order in the apprehension of difference." The
work was inspired by her trip to Eritrea, but has been created as a portrait
of a more common landscape.
The in-progress program will become part of a larger work to be completed
and premiered in 2005.
The event is free; however, $5 donations are welcome. For information,
contact the Department of Dance at 292-7977.
